The stress coat products (and dechlorinators) that are amine based bind to chlorine during recharge and are absorbed into purigen. Once ya put it back in the tank it dumps chloramine into the water and will most likely kill your fish.

It's safe to use them in the tank, just not when recharging, ya need prime for that.

Stuff ya need to recharge is Prime, Bleach, and Neutral regulator/discus buffer.

Bleach will put the PH of purigen around 12, unless you're running a saltwater or other high PH setup the purigen can raise your PH after a recharge.

Rallys, is it still keeping the nitrates down? Also, do you recharge when it's completely exhausted or slightly brown?

I recgarge it when it's damn near black.

I guarantee it will last that long. If you buy it and you can't recgarge it after 2-3 months, it's defective, or you used some chemical that ruined it.

Usually stress coat. IF you want to make sure that you aren't going to ruin it. Wait a month after stop using any of the gel based dechlorinators. Prime is your best bet, but I have gotten away with AmQuel in a pinch.
