  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What about Iodotropheus sprengerae AKA Rusty Cichlid, they are purpleish with a little rusty coloration.

Otopharnyx lithobates, just the regular old yellow top. The male is VERY purple with a bright yellow blaze:

This fish is blue, not purple at all. Not great housed with mbuna either

thats more than one for rusties...... they are very cheap and readily available. but the real question is, do you want mbunas? do some research as keeping mbuna requires knowing what species can be mixed and having enough rockwork for territories. I love mbunas and they have coloring like poor man's marine fish :) good luck!

Hey guys I guess time for me to start up another tank, so I figured I would set up a nice 90 gal in my new bedroom for me and my future wife. I'm thinking African cichlids from Victoria & Malawi Lakes. So far so good, but here's the problem the only request my fiancée has made is that there must be at least two purple fish. You guys have helped me so much in the past I am counting on you all once again to come up with a purple African cichlid that I could put into my new aquarium set up. Thanks in advance

Sometimes if you mix Malawi cichlids with Victorians the Victorians get intimidated easily and fail to thrive. My book has an undescribed Paralabodochromis species from lake Victoria listed as "rock kribensis". It is a purple fish with black bars and orange unpaired fins.

Their color isn't that deep all of the time. They are a great fish, but can sometimes be difficult to manage in a community setup.

We have a difference of opinion there, I would call Lithobates more of a purple/viloet than blue.

Also, the OP never said he was keeping mbuna, but the lithos would hang in there pretty well. Mbunas do not require quite the STRICT vegan diet that many claim, they can tolerate some protein in the mix.

I would still disagree on the color. All of the lithobates I have seen are a blue. Diet concerns are not why I would stock in separate tanks. I feed both my lithobates and my mbuna the same food without issue. I separate based on aggression issues. Mbuna often harass haps that are in the same tank, and causes the lithobates color to be less and fins to be shredded.
