Haven't seen this mentioned, so i figured i'd share :)

Problem:
I've heard a lot of ppl complain about the noise of overflows, and i just set up a new one and it was LOUD.. didn't bother me directly but it bothered my wife whom in turn bothered me LOL.. my overflow is one inch PVC, and it is easily handling the 200gph my pump is putting out.. too easily, because the water falls 6-8"down the overflow inlet and the noise echoes back up the pipe and is fairly loud.. i never had that problem with my old pvc overflow because it was smaller and the inlet pipe was almost always close to being topped off so there was little noise.

Solution:
I thought of a few other things which seemed to have obvious drawbacks, and then thought of the winning idea: straws. I took a bunch of straws, and packed them into my inlet. Simple. If there was any reduction in flow rate it was VERY marginal, but aside from a few burps as the flow adjusted, noiseless. All that i can hear now is the whir of the pump and trickling from the overflow outlet and return, no obnoxious echo. :)

Tips:
Make sure that the straws fit in very tightly. They are hard to get out if you drop them in. Yea i did that.

Hope that helps some people!
