PVC overflow silencing

I'd try and stick only 1 or 2 straws and hold them up by piercing a tooth-pick through them at the top so they don't flush down.
The gurgling happens because air gets sucked in and you need to break that air/water-flow pattern to stop the noise.
So sticking a straw in (below the water-level in the pipe) should help you break that pattern.
 
Been a while.. Thought i would update. I top off by pouring water into the overflow inlet, so I guess that might "clean" the straws a bit. Other than that, no maintenance and No change.. Still silent, no wet carpet. Although like I pointed out originally, I could cover the over flow and the pump would empty the last chamber without flooding the tank and run dry; wet carpet IMO means poor sump design compounded by poor over flow design, not just poor overflow design. Anyway, this solution may not work for everyone, but it's def not an experiment at this point, and it is certainly viable. :)
