PVC overflow silencing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All the straws are the same length..I pressed the center ones down a little once they were in the overflow inlet. Another advantage of this is that small fish can't fit thru. I used to have Ottos that would actually hang out inside my inlet but eventually I'd end up having to scoop them outta my sump. After having this running for a while there is a fairly consistent intermittent burp noise..still less annoying than the incessant echo/gurgle but next water change I'm going to clean the straws so it is super silent again. The water is super dark ATM from a new piece of wood.

Doesn't noticeably restrict flow. I'm sure it does.. But if it was close enough for it to be an issue you should probably be using 2 or a larger diameter anyway. I can pour water directly into it from a gallon jug as fast as it will pour on top of the 200gph return and it doesn't back up at all. Actually probably going to get a slightly larger pump at some point since it hasn't been giving me trouble.

I wonder if it restricted the flow enough where air does not get sucked in (the gurgle noise) and create a full siphon. Is the water level in the tank above the intake of the drain? Do you notice some air getting sucked in? It looks like the middle straws are lower then the perimeter straws, does this help with the noise? Great idea though and looks like it makes a wonderful screen to keep the debris or pets out of the pipe

Just caught that post the you said you pressed down on the center of the straws. Did this affect the noise?

It just allows the water to run down instead of falling. Idk about the straws being pushed down I just kind of did it on instinct.

how is this system holding up so far? what did you use to secure the straws. cleaning/maintenance schedule? I am curious and interested as you can tell

I tryed for almost a year to make my PVC over flow silent. It was impossible untill I did a durso stand pipe and bought a drilled tank.

rtc: do you find the durso sufficiently quite for say, a wife to accept? I am either going durso or herbie next year with my 350 and it has to be living room acceptable for volume
