this comment was left about an hour ago on that article:
"The solution is very simple; outlaw all snakes. Snakes are useless and they serve no purpose. They are ugly and they smell funny so let's get rid of them. Make it illegal to own a snake. Make it law to require an individual to kill a snake if they encounter one. This way an innocent child will never have to die like this again. The US needs to set an example for the world. If we do I think one day we can eliminate snakes from planet Earth."

sometimes i just want to slap people...

he/she is such a savior.

if that is the case i think he/she should start to kill humans. there are more human murders than snakes killing people all over the world.

Sucks, but blame the parents not the snake. Why is a 2 year old outside by herself? No different from a human predator.
5 Bucks says the little girl walked up to the snake.

The parents are 100% in falt:irked: Just a few mouths ago here and Im shure Miguel unfornatly remenbars such horrible drama, a rotweiller killed a I beleave 1 year old, as he got out of its granmothers car:( KIDS CANT BE LET OUT OF OUR SIGTH FOR ONE MINUTE! If its not a dangerous or potencialy dangerous animal we have its another thing: pools, medicins, poisons, small objects:nilly: In this drama it was the parents fault in both leaving the kid alone for the time enough to provoque the atack and much more importantly for didnt introduced the kid to the dog as a menbar of the pack, that would have transformed the killer into a brick wall gardian:( What a shame

The child wasn't outside she was in her room. The half starved python belonged to an irresponsible pubescent 30 yr old BF that was dating her mother.

It wasn't in a secure enclosure escaped and killed her. He had no permit for it which is the norm in Florida as its never been enforced.

The ban is coming to Florida . Every politician wants it and Florida wildlife folks want it. Now it might not be banned in any other state which simply means people will get them and still keep them here.

Problem was that the permit law which said -You had to have a secure approved enclosure before getting the snake, microchip, $100 yrly permit fee.

Was NEVER enforced. The initial fee for the permit by itself is a major deterrent for many reckless potential keepers.

That $100 permit fee in itself if enforced would have probably prevented the death of the 2 yr old child.

When tourist from other countries are afraid to go to Glades bird trails for bird watching due to fear of pythons . You know the ban is coming. I myself have gone there lots and never saw one .

Would make for great pic lol.

they actually said that the snake had escaped multiple times that night alone. i don't think they had it housed very well at all

I do think the ban was coming either way as seems every week a python found in someones yard but now due to that guy and his GF as BOTH to blame for the childs death.

I now think the politicians have the ammo they needed to hurry things up .

Some keep them in backyard in rabbit hutches or screened patios .

Actually, the FWC is doing a very good job in enforcing the rules but it is impossible to find everyone who bought a burmese or retic from a mall 5 years ago so they are doing a great job given the circumstances. While working the reptile rescue in Jacksonville, every other week or so there would be a confiscated python given to us to take care of. I do not think that a ban is coming quite yet, FL has the most reasonable permitting system and a ton of exotic dealers that will not go quietly.

I cant stand the FWC . I cant stand them as find them useless when it comes to conservation of natural wild land , fauna protection. In other words doing their job.

They love saying how the Cuban treefrog or Knight anole is wiping out native fauna but they refuse to put a limit on the amount of native fauna like green tree frogs-green anoles , ring necks, etc you can collect and sell as feeder, etc.

http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=28&de=405186

There are ads weekly by many in Kingsnake alone selling natives as feeders by the hundreds/thousands. All the non natives combined don't put a dent compared to human collectors and wildland destruction.

I emailed them roughly year ago when saw a screened milk crates filled with green anoles and 5 lined skinks caught by outskirts of Glades .

They replied that they didn't think any impact was being made and they would look in to it .

However lets blame non natives is their motto. I belong to a turtle conservation club here that wants to stop collection of native turtles for food sales over seas as they to (soft shells) are collected by the drones .

It was only Gvnr Crist who has helped us and as you know a collection limit is coming. Long over due and thanks ONLY to him NOT FWC . I have no problem with farm raised soft shells being sold as food which is great just not raping of the environment. The FWC is useless .

I agree with you 100% no way they can prevent sales of pythons without permits and to the wrong people but again when these pythons are confiscated they don't fine the owner thus no actual deterrent. If owners were actually fined and a real fine with teeth it would curtail the amount of people who keep them illegally. Now they rather punish responsible owners by banning them.

Even the Cyprus areas of the Glades which are the last stronghold of the Florida panther they are now thinking of building roads through so humans can now access the area. FWC is no friend of Florida's fauna.

I salute you for working in reptile rescue.

I don't own pythons nor a non native fauna lobbyist lol
