??? you mean sift? Like as in mix up so no nitrogen gas build up? I just use my hand and my fish help too buldozing it around. Or do you mean like clean the sand? Just drag your fingers through it like a rake and turn the sand over. Remember to remove the decor or at least pick it up to get under it. Turn your filters off too.

if i pick the wood up itll take me awhile to put back in and set the rocks on them to hold the wood down and yah how do u clean the sand is what i ment

That's just something you're going to have to deal with until the wood sinks on it's own.

i would just clean around it or move your hand back and forth to fan all the dirt and stuff out to where you can such it up

To make the DW sink faster I boil mine until all the Air has been expelled from the cavities in the wood. Then I cool it down in a bucket of ice cold water and place it back in the tank. I usually boil mine for about 1 and 1/2 hours depending on how big the piece is and how dense the wood is. Thats how you get wood to sink or just screw the wood onto a piece of slate and silicone over the screw.

How you clean sand when it has already been placed in the tank is you tank a normal 1/2" siphon hose start your suction via mouth or hand pump and start siphoning water out then take the hose end and place it about 1/4"-1/2" off the sand bed over the debri or fecial matter and it should lift up off the sand with the sand still on the bottom. If you begin sucking up sand just pull away from the sand bed.

ok thanks all
you could use silicone, and glue the wood to a flat piece of slate. I used to have a driftwood setup like that.

Sand looks cool, but the more I think about it, and the more I read, I'm going with fine black gravel for my next tank.

sand just seems like a pain in the ***
