Sand looks cool, but the more I think about it, and the more I read, I'm going with fine black gravel for my next tank.

sand just seems like a pain in the ***

No not at all it is very easy to clean and maintain. I find it more appealing than gravel. The only tank that I have that is going to have gravel in it is my 400 gallon is because I am getting the large 2-3" stones for free lol from my river!

Anyways sand is very very good substrate and I say go for it. Just make sure it doesn't get in your filters which rarely happens unless you have real ***hole fish like mine lol.

you can clean it with a python? I saw some nice black sand (think it was from tahiti), that I would really like to use, but I started thinking about how much it must suck to clean, and then hear people echo that on here...

Yes Tahitian Moon Sand I know the stuff. Yeah that sand is great and very dense so even if it gets stirred it sinks immediately. I have never tried with a python only a siphon hose. I don't know how powerfull a python is as I have never owned one as I do my water changes with pumps.

thanks, I just use syphon pressure to drain my tank anyway, and if its denser sand, should be good. i have pearlish color gravel now, and I'm sick of it.

I love sand so much more than gravel. I have found it to be easier to maintain. I use pool filter sand and the python works great with it. It is also way cheaper than gravel.

I just want a darker substrate. at lowes the other day, I saw "desert sand" for planting cactus. it was red, pretty cool about $1.00/lb.

Just kind of hover your python/syphon over the sand and get it close enough to where it sucks up the turds but not the sand. Because it's fine-grained compared to gravel you don't see so much crap settling down in the sand as with gravel so you don't have to stir it quite so much. Not sure about the dark sand, might be harder to see and spot-syphon the dirt.
