Question about lighting a 125g aquarium

I would just run one 48" shop light. That is alot of light for a fish only tank. It will give you slightly shaded top corners of the tank which adds to the dramatic look.

I had thought of that, but am also worried it won't be enough light. I think I will try to find a single bulb fixture and get two of those. If I can't find decently priced units, I will buy just one dual bulb fixture and see how it looks. Of it is too dark, I will use two units with a single bulb in each.

you should be ok over open water .. provided that you dont have air stones(this is pretty important ..water getting on light fixture,,constantly:cry:.).. and should be ok if you elevate them a little (like fastened to a canopy...)

The tank won't have air stones unless there is need for it (such as if the tank gets ich and I need to keep oxygen levels high due to increased temp and/or chemicals in the water).

I am building the canopy to be 8" tall from the top of the tank trim. Think that is high enough or should I do 10-12"? The fixture will be screwed directly into the top of the canopy, so it will be as far away from the water as possible.

If I use two of the 4' fixtures, should I install some sort of fan? Do fluorescent lights get hot enough to worry about a heat issue? The canopy will be entirely enclosed with the exception of the back. There will be a 3" gap from the top of the tank to the bottom of the back side of the canopy. Is that enough ventilation?

Bump.

I had thought of this, but my house is pretty well temperature controlled, so heat loss will not be a big issue. I think I will start out without the glass tops and if evaporation becomes a large issue, I can easily add them.
