Question about Metro + Focus and feeding.

Thanks dieselhybrid,

This is my first large cichlid and I definitely want the best for him. It's unfortunate to have to deal with all of this but I am hoping that we can clean up his gut and get him really healthy for a long happy life.

I am lucky enough to be in a spot financially that it's possible to spend the money on him. I have a responsibility to do what I can for my animal companion.

Wish us luck

So I am pretty sure after all that Kai may of not even had hole in the head. The one spot which I always though to be a pit from the disease is still there.

The thing is it's look more and more like just a normal sensory pit. I just recently noticed on a macro photo I took that he has these same pits on the bottom jaw around his mouth.

I guess lesson learned. Seem like the internal parasite capillaria was the culprit all along for his clear feces.

I disagree. Here's why; Your fish showed clear signs of a gastrointestinal issue, suspected initially to be a result of S. vortens. You treated with what looked to myself and others to be a MEGA dose of metronidazole laced food, and even still you saw signs of S. vortens in your initial smear with your microscope. S. vortens does not always result in a fish getting HITH. HITH only becomes an issue with some fish, if/when the parasites become systemic and travel into the blood and organs of the fish. This seems to be more problematic with certain SA species of cichlids, compared to say African cichlids. But either way, S. vortens does not always equate to HITH.

So the fact that your fish has a hole, doesn't have a hole, or is a sensory pit hole as you now claim, does not remove the fact that your fish was still carrying signs of this parasite in his feces, post Metronidazole treatment. Post MEGA Metronidazole treatment. So that fact that there was indeed some S. vortens in your initial smear, clearly points as that being at least part of the original issue. You may have killed a ton of Spiro parasites with your first 3 weeks of treatment. I suspect that you needed to treat for both issues, as your fish had two problems that required different medications to totally resolve. That's my take on everything.

Glad to hear that your fish is doing better.
