Question about new oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Took my oscar almost a month to really come around they grow quickly so if separating them is an option then do that until the o gains some size. But try moving the decor around and add some more hiding spots maybe a cave so he secure on all sides except the entrance

Oscars mope a lot. If your temp is 78-80deg f then I would give it time to settle in. Don't unleash the convict until there is a considerable size difference. They are lb per lb way nastier than a oscar

The temp is right at 80. What do y'all think about the temporary divider I have? It allows water to flow through it, and they can actually swim around it but rarely do, so it keeps the aggression pretty low. Do you think that is OK? Or do I need to put someone in a separate tank?

Tonight could get rough for the o ...when lights go down aggression goes up

So do you think his weird behavior is just the usual thing for an Oscar that has been moved around? How shall I handle the aggression from the convict? There are a few places to hide, none of which the Oscar has tried to use. I don't want him to get too stressed! Thanks!

I've haven't tried placing a small oscar in a tank with no hiding places and a larger, more aggressive tank mate that has already claimed the tank. If I had to hazard a guess, it's appropriate behavior.

Well I moved the hiding places around before adding the oscar (as I do when I add a new african cichlid to my other tank) but there aren't that many so maybe that didn't help. I've got plenty of makeshift hides that I will add to see if that helps.

Another weird thing happened..I found the oscar with a danio sticking out of his mouth...it seemed stuck so I caught the oscar in a net and he immediately split out the danio. I'm surprised because the Oscar seems quite slow compared to the convict, and of course less aggressive, and the convict has never gotten one of the danios!

No, I would say lights off, always less stressful for fish. I always keep lights off when introducing fish as well.
