Pool filter sand works great and very easy to clean the poop settles on the top

Oscars (and all cichlids) have an extra set of jaws in their throat (a bit like "Alien")
these jaws are used to slowly bring large food items, (such as your danios) down, the fish is not stuck, it is slowly being processed.
And although your oscar can be a a predator, that does not make it aggressive like the convict. Though the convict is an omnivore, it is not built (small mouth) to eat the large items an oscar can, but is much more territorial and outwardly aggressive than mild mannered oscars. They do not come from the same countries, and I don't believe they are ever truly compatible species, so should be kept in separate tanks. I'm sure many people do, but to me, a total mismatch.
I also agree, substrate makes most cichlids (except some open water pelagic species such as Bathybates) comfortable.
A thin layer of pool filter sand, as state above, goes a long way to aid in comfort, and will eventually have the benefit of containing billions of beneficial bacteria.

The pool filter sand, that is an interesting idea. I'm not against substrate if it is easy to clean. A couple questions:

Does it get sucked out when suctioning?

Do you have to get down in it like when suctioning gravel?

How difficult would it be to add now that the fish are there? I can't imagine catching the danios!

And what would I look for to buy? To make sure there is nothing toxic in it? I van just get this at Lowes? How much would I need?

Thank you!

Yes it will get sucked into the siphon if you get to close. To clean up waste you kind of just let the siphon hover above it making small circles like a wand once the waste is disturbed it will get sucked up so there is no need to get down in it like with the gravel. Very quick. I actually use an eheim quick vac a few times a week so on wc day its just siphoning out tank water.

I would just go to a pool store. I think the one I used was by light house. Also stay away from play sand from what I read it gets disturbed quickly and ends up in your filter causing problems with the impeller.

Only issue is cleaning the sand. You really have to clean the heck out of it. I just use a 5 gal bucket and fill it maybe a little less than a quarter with sand and blast it with a hose once its filled dump the water (careful not to spill out the sand) and keep repeating. Im sure the danios will be fine but maybe remove the oscar once your ready to put the sand in. I would probably leave him in and just add the sand to one side of the tank the spread it out by hand

if you are saying your temp is sitting on 80 drop it down a few degrees...warmer tanks usually equal higher aggression....
Also if your Convict is equal or bigger than your O, you are asking for trouble.... not only is the convict naturally more aggressive, but at that size ratio it can be assumed that the Con is way more mature than your O.... at 3 inches your con can be considered a sub-adult while an oscar at that size is still a juvie

I am the odd ball on sand versus gravel. I prefer gravel. oscar Jags, JD love to dig, with sand they bary(sp)all kinds of crap, sinking the vacuum tube with out loosing sand to get it out is problematic. with gravel this is not an issue.

and no i do not be leave the ol, fish my swallow a piece of gravel and bind him up. as always IMHO, most good knowledgeable fish keepers use sand. pool sand. as said i am the odd ball here.

Honestly I have no interest in gravel on a tank of this size...I don't like the look and it is difficult to clean. Has anyone any input.on the changes I've made to the decor?

Jow is the o doing ? Has the convict calmed down ?
