Question About Wild Oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You make a good point but I'm wanting to get an oscar again anyways. It's been a while since mine died and I'm ready for a new one, the fact that it's advertised as wild from a vendor here doesn't matter too much to me but from what I've seen in stores around me I might as well spend a few more bucks within reason and chance getting something very unique and not just another LFS/Petsmart oscar. I think if the price is within reason I might as well get something I've honestly in the back of my head wanted for a while even if they're not always as nice as advertised. Appearance also isn't too important to me as long as the fish is happy and healthy. Thanks for the input though, no toes stepped on here.

Understandable, I've seen Wild Oscars for sale for 17.99 so honestly with Oscar.. it's as rare as YOU make it.

Do you know the difference in appearance? Is one fancier than the other in their looks?

There is a black/grey/tan wild oscar but I don't know about it being 100% legit on color wise.. The wild oscar IVE seen look like Red Oscars but display a very bronze type color rather than orange when mature! babies look black/grey

Here is my version of a "wild oscar" at the moment.

I have a Jeff Rapps Rio yavari oscar, Theres nothing different compared to a CB oscar. Same features but its just a different color and I love it!! lol

All oscars you see in pet stores are line bred for color. Wild ones (or just captive bred wild types) can look quite nice (for an Oscar) but it seems like every time wild ones come in they're from a different collection point or have a different name so it's hard to gauge what they'll look like as adults.

Here's some wild types from google:

In Junbo fish, it was said that wild oscars often have many "eyes" rather just one in domestic ones...then again, info is really old and there probably have new bloodlines in oscars.

I had a breeding pair of wild oscars about 15 years ago. Color wise they were absolutely nothing special, hardly any ocelli but it was amazing to watch them interact and breed. Not sure how exactly, but they did look different from domestic oscars but i cant put a finger on it.
