Question for Aquaclear users.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Laziness has no place in fishkeeping. All filters need be maintained. :duh: I've used AC110s and 70s for over 6 yeas without fail or flood, but then again I properly maintain my tanks so my experience probably would not be applicable to your situation.

I don't think the Aquaclear is a great filter though. I don't think the sponge is easy to clean on the 110. As thick as it is it takes quite a while to get it all cleaned out to an acceptable level. That's rinsing it under a tap, so I'm not trying to clean a sponge in a bucket of used aquarium water that is filthy as soon as you squeeze the sponge in it the first time, so you're trying to clean the sponge in dirty water. I just stick it in some declorinated water after cleaning before I put it back. I don't know if people just usually squeeze it in a bucket of water a few times normally and think well the water is filthy now, so the sponge is clean.

The sponges do take some time to completely clean. I have found that if you cut the sponge in half horizontally and stack the two half sponges they are easier to clean and does not affect the performance. I clean the sponges thoroughly under hot tap water.

what i do with my aquaclear 110 sponges is cut them into 5 or 6 pieces and fit them back into the filter so that they are butted snugly up to each other, as if it was still one big sponge. makes for super easy cleaning by squeezing them out in a bucket of tank water, and if i need to transfer media to another filter to kickstart a tank, i can take one or two sponge pieces out without affecting the bacteria colony too much. works great!

Man, you mfk'ers really love your aquaclears. I may see its flaws but with so many positive reviews/opinions I may have to just try one out and see for myself. I can live with monthly maintenence but weekly is a bit too much (only water changes weekly!). I think the idea of cutting the sponges into two pieces or more for easier rinsing is a great idea and the rock on top of the filter cover (just incase of floating/flooding) may be needed. I wish they made the new fluval C4 in a bigger size as I love the design (big sponge for first stage filtration that pulls right out without having to touch the other filtration sections.). To aaronb thanks for the post it was informative. In response to your first question yeah I really made this post to bait and bash people and I wish I had such an important and ever so interesting life like yours....PLEASE... besides that remark your post was very informative and helpful. Bdereck67 your comment that there is no place for laziness in fish keeping, I think it depends on your opinions of what lazy is. As I said before I may not find time every week to clean my filter and if you have the time more power to you but for me that is not always an option. I know all filters have to be maintained it's just the frequency that matters (my customized marineland HOB's can go months without maintenence and work perfectly)...Laziness is relative (laziness = efficency) I like to use dry and frozen fish foods because I am too lazy to go out and make my own foods or find/buy/catch/culture live foods. I like to ask questions on the internet/read a book/magazine to deal with my problems because I am too lazy to deal with the time needed to do it by trial and error myself (especially when someone else spent their time and figured it out already). I think laziness has a place in practical fishkeeping. Sometimes through my laziness I use my brother to pick up items from the store that I need and have him carry buckets of water to the sink to be dumped. LOL. I still stick with my opinon that a good filter should not have to be maintained that often and when forgotten about for a couple of months should still work great (not show dramatic signs of efficeincy loss.) Sorry if I seemed a bit riled up as im not used to the "internet rudness" that I really don't come across too much in real life (this is the first forum I ever joined im not really a computer/internet junkie). I live Hawaii and am a local so I give and recieve aloha daily. In person if you are rude to me I can deal with it appropriately, but there is no face to face contact on the net (people are even more rude and brazen with their comments because of no fear of retaliation). I feel sorry for you guys, you gotta live on the mainland (no aloha) but as we say here "lucky we live hawaii". That phrase really only applies to locals and/or people who know/understand the culture and ways. When you come and visit from the mainland you gotta watch out cuz your visiting and you dont actually live here (are part of the community/haoles). Come with the attitude of being rude or making rude comments/doing whatever you want and you will get checked, which to think about it even applies to locals.

can you say bi-polar:lol3:

someone needs to call 1-800-DR.-PHIL

Definitely not lazy when it comes to typing :screwy: are you. All your examples in your last long winded post are not laziness, they are just choices in which way the task gets DONE. When you are too lazy to do something, then the task does NOT get DONE. Which you are claiming to be the case with your filtration maintenance.

Yep I can say bi-polar and LOL coming from the guy that needs his fishtanks to keep him sane and off the 6 o'clock news. I think your the one that needs to call 1-800-Dr.-Phil!:ROFL:I dont think you know what bi-polar means... I was being nice while fending off the unneccesary comments. Big kahuna LOL you wish.

You don't understand laziness. Laziness is the disinclination to activity or exertion while having the ability to do so or resistance to work or exertion. Laziness is the quality that makes you go to great effort to reduce overall energy expenditure. Doesn't necessarily mean you don't do anything or nothing gets done (just don't like to do it or don't like to work hard at doing something). I can do things the lazy (easy) way or the hard way. I could make my own fish food and or catch live foods but I am disinclined to excert myself to do so. I am too lazy/dont have enough time sometimes to get to cleaning my filters - so instead I go to great efforts to find the best filter that requires the least maintenance without problems. How is getting somebody to do something for you that you can easily do not being lazy? LOL. Work smart not hard. No, I'm not lazy when it comes to typing - I'm an english major. LOL.

Yeah my tank and my family are my safe zone that is impervious after a hard days work. The 6oclock news was a joke kinda like your rant and tantrum. Instead of typing an essay about nothing go clean your filter

LOL. I dont have to clean my filters. All fish are fine, water crystal clear, and parameters great. Impervious? LOL. So... if you don't work or have an easy day at work you may cause damage or harm your family and fish? LMAO. You dont even know what that word means LOL. Got under your skin didn't I! Don't go listening to the voices in your head and start killing people now. Sounds like your throwing a temper tantrum and ranting about me typing an essay about nothing. I'm getting the hang of being rude on the internet.:headbang2

Sorry about the original comment. There are people that just come in here and say stupid things occasionally to get a reaction. A few months back someone ask how to decorate their ten gallon they were going to keep a tiger shovelnose catfish in just to see people freak out.

I think you would like an aquaclear, but like anything there is always room for improvement. Like the lids on the 110 vibrate, so it'd be nice if they'd smooth out the motor or make the lid fit on tighter or something. You might want that rock just to keep it quiet. I actually don't use the lids at all. Good luck.
