Laziness has no place in fishkeeping. All filters need be maintained.
I've used AC110s and 70s for over 6 yeas without fail or flood, but then again I properly maintain my tanks so my experience probably would not be applicable to your situation.
The sponges do take some time to completely clean. I have found that if you cut the sponge in half horizontally and stack the two half sponges they are easier to clean and does not affect the performance. I clean the sponges thoroughly under hot tap water.

I don't think the sponge is easy to clean on the 110. As thick as it is it takes quite a while to get it all cleaned out to an acceptable level. That's rinsing it under a tap, so I'm not trying to clean a sponge in a bucket of used aquarium water that is filthy as soon as you squeeze the sponge in it the first time, so you're trying to clean the sponge in dirty water. I just stick it in some declorinated water after cleaning before I put it back. I don't know if people just usually squeeze it in a bucket of water a few times normally and think well the water is filthy now, so the sponge is clean.

are you. All your examples in your last long winded post are not laziness, they are just choices in which way the task gets DONE. When you are too lazy to do something, then the task does NOT get DONE. Which you are claiming to be the case with your filtration maintenance.
I dont think you know what bi-polar means... I was being nice while fending off the unneccesary comments. Big kahuna LOL you wish.
