Question to big tank owners...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cooya - agree. The bigger the tank ,the more stable the water . You could
mess up a bit and the results wouldnt be as disastrous as on smaller tank.

i was doing a water change yesterday .. left the hose running unchecked for a minute or 2 as i was multi tasking ( forgot what else i was doing !) . I came back
and the hose was hot... boiling water was coming out of it!! Luckily this was a 180
and i only had a 5 degree bump. But imagine if that was a 30 gallon or even a 75.

Guys.. this gallons thing is very not used over in asia.
All I can say is..

Before:

2 tier 3 x 1.5 x 1.5 feet tank.

After:

6 x 2.5 x 2.5 feet tank with 4 feet sump filtration.
3.8 liter per gallon U.S.

I started with a ten gallon guppy tank and a claw foot bathtub for pumpkinseeds and bullheads, added a 5 gal for a mudpuppy when I was 10, since then tank sizes, (and numbers) have gone up and down. While in the service the biggest I could ussually get away with was a 20g and I gave them away when I got transferred. Biggest tank I have owned was a 150g.

I went from a 50g to another 50g , then to a 90g then to a 200g then to a 400g, then to a 1000g and from there another 1000g and from there to a 1850g these tanks are still running except for 1000g tanks. From that I am planning a 12,000+ plus tank with a 33ft by 6ft veiwing window so that I can do an amazon bio-tope. It should be ready to get under way in abouts two years, I am having problems with building permits, but they will be solved it just takes time.

Your progression was gradual but you never stopped!! LOL.. 1 K tank is something that im aiming for in a few. I had a large pond but not a 1k tank.

None of my tanks would qualify as big compared to what many of you have. But... As a small child, I had a simple semi-transparent plastic container (a gallon perhaps) where I would put tiny fish I would gather from small brooks in my neck of the woods: Tiny fish with shiny silver, green, and red on them, and tiny suckermouth fish. They would die soon enough without any filtration.

In the States, I first got a 10-gallon, then a 55-gallon. Got a silver aro, but sold it back because I could not make it eat prepared foods; got a black aro which jumped out of the tank during the night and died; got a rope fish which also slithered out and died; got discouraged and gave the hobby up for 17 years. About 5 years ago, I got a 29; most of the fish I got then have done rather nicely; so, I decided to try the silver arowana again and got a 125 for it, but this aro also died after a week... Got some discus which grew nicely but drove me crazy and bored alternately.

Now, I got another aro, 2 weeks ago today, at Petco (saw another small aro there today at the bottom of the aquarium, clearly in pain, severely bent with all of its dorsal fin missing :shakehead)

... I hope this fourth time is the charm. :hitting:
