question to dat owners.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A pair would be a bad idea for the most part. They are aggressive towards each other and a group is needed to spread out the aggression.

4-5 is usually the minimum if you have multiples, it's not impossible to keep 2 together but it's pretty unlikely.

Yeah I have two together and there is some fighting. the person i bought them from had them together with no agression.(he says) But I can hear them fight every once in a while. My future plans involves adding more or seperating them.

Im really pleased with the info you guys supplied the op. Searching this site isnt that easy anymore and its great that experienced ppl are here to help. Thats what MFK is about. Not flexing your fish knowledge or collection.

+1, i really appreciate it guys. all these answers are very straight forward and you all were very helpful. cheers to a great mfk informational thread :) so do certain species of dat stay smaller?

i think american tigers are the smallest. think they max out 12"?

:iagree: NGTs don't get as large either, I've never seen one larger than 12" in recent memory though a slightly larger one wouldn't surprise me.

are american tigers hard to get hands on? and whats the prices like?

ATs are the cheapest and pretty easy to find, being in general the least desirable kind. Also keep in mind this is a brackish fish (regardless of what some people say) . Price vary based on your location.
For someone new to dats ITs are the best choice IMO.

A stable dat is a happy dat.

Not true. I've seen unstable dats turning stable during fights or when hungry. T1 has a thread on the subject I believe.
I think this forum needs some stickies addressing the "stability" and " getting your dat off live food" subjects since they pop up every other month or so.

I have been looking around for a decent deal on a dat to grow out in my 125g and then move to a 300g when I move and I have been wondering this exact same thing about there "stability" and what it meant. Good to know.

I'm quite confused about this. I've seen dozens and dozens of dats in community tanks w/ FW fish like Aro, Bichir, etc, etc. Are they adaptable to FW or Brackish or they are strictly brackish?...
