Questions about breeding hystrix

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are only two groups in the US that I know of.

Dave has a trio in Seattle - an 11" male, a 12" female and a 13" female.

Katie has a trio in Ann Arbor - a 10" male a 13" female and a 14" female. She has bred hers at least once.

Colin

I also have one 8inch mature male. That will be going to Dave soon

I've had this trio of histrix only a few months. Todd and I acquired them from Colin. they are all doing well.

Brad - If I can get my act together......Shortly after the new year he should be here!

Your 48 x 48 x 8 should be fine for raising pups. We use shallow tanks (14" tall) for raising motoro pups and they work well. Just filter the tank well.

Good luck.

Some nerd on another list had the nerve to try and tell me getting
hystrix in North America would be a no-go, and said they are only
being bred in Europe. Thanks for clearing this up for me guys, so I
wasn't imagining things when I some last year. Guess I don't need
glasses after all :grinno:

Brazil has not exported any true Hystrix for over 2 years..

They are near impossible to acquire in North America, or even from Europe for that matter..

If you can find them, they are usually near adult size and are very expensive..

The false Hystrx from Peru are getting more and more common with the closure of the Brazil border.. and sadly, people still think they are Hystrix!!

Here is a pic of the false Hystrix, from Peru... ugly little Brown ray, came in emaciated. Sadly the exporters treat these guys like garbage because they are so abundant.. unlike true Hystrix.

but here is the true hystrix.. much different ray, obviously..

These were Colin's, now owned by Dave.. one of the two breeding groups in North America.

Love true Hystrix.. wish they weren't available.. The only ones Ive seen are crazy expensive these days!! Too bad the market is FLOODED with all those FALSE hystrix's from PERU.. :(

well the pic of the real one looks like the ones I've seen, those others just look like
bad motoros. Can they be any harder to get than Leo, Henlei or Pearls?

Considering true Hystrix come from the same area and Brazil.. They are just as hard to acquire as the black rays. Thus, the increase in price and extremely limited availability.. No one breeds them in high enough numbers to re-sell commercially to the public, considering they produce very few pups being one of the smaller species.

The only way you could acquire a true Hystrix is you know the breeder themselves, or if someone owned one for a few years and returned it to a fish store.

Not a single Hystrix offered on a commercial aquarium wholesale list is a True Hystrix..

Order the Hystrix from Peru.. you will end up with bad motoros..

I buy my larger breeding stock from breeders every chance I get. I deal with a couple overseas, and the buyer who helps me out gets pics of the
exact fish BEFORE I send any money. You'd be surprised what they breed
in Asia, just about anything you want.
