I buy my larger breeding stock from breeders every chance I get. I deal with a couple overseas, and the buyer who helps me out gets pics of the
exact fish BEFORE I send any money. You'd be surprised what they breed
in Asia, just about anything you want.

Except Tiger rays.

Only Shedd Aquarium aquarium has bred Tiger rays..

Here is an interesting article I wrote on asian stingray breeding
http://www.stingraysource.com/StingraySource/dreamline/hybrid.htm

Hope you enjoy it..

and incase you still think you can get true Hystrix from South America heres another thread
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110120&highlight=hystrix

and no one that I am aware of breeds Hystrix rays on a commercial scale, because they produce so few offspring.. They probably would sell locally to other breeding projects and not waste their time shipping cheap rays overseas..

Some nerd on another list had the nerve to try and tell me getting
hystrix in North America would be a no-go, and said they are only
being bred in Europe. Thanks for clearing this up for me guys, so I
wasn't imagining things when I some last year. Guess I don't need
glasses after all :grinno:

I would also have to agree with that so called nerd, True hystrix are just about impossible to find in north american at the moment. There could be people breeding them in asia but I have not see any for sale. All rays coming in as hystrix are false and not the true hystrix.

That you know of. I hear others are trying as well. At least you can't
say its never been done.

Not really, I don't believe in blanket labelling, just because some do it,
doesn't mean they all do. I have friends over there, people with good
reputations that I trust, as do many others. I take it you haven't visited
with any farms there in person? Neither have I, however, I wouldn't go
generalizing stingray breeding over there, either way. No matter where
you go, hybrids exist, here, in Europe or elsewhere. I know enough
about who I deal with and what I'm buying to be confident that I get
what I pay for. Actually, I pay a bit more for my fish from there, for
that very reason- I trust who I'm dealing with.

Well the whole 'commercial scale' thing is over rated. I'm more interested
in preserving the species thanks. I don't expect to make money at it, I'm
happy just to make some of my investment back. There's no such thing as
a waste of time when you are doing something good that you truly care
about. Zebra plecos are bad for that too, few offspring, hard to get, not
easy to breed, and as a result pricey. But some of us do it anyway. Just
because not very many people have bred tigers, why is that a reason for
me to not try? At least they ARE being bred, here as well as overseas. If
I was into high "output" fish I would not have chosen rays.

When I first got into rays everyone told me how tough they were to
keep, never mind breed. Then I hooked up with some breeders who also
happened to be really nice, knowledgeable people who wanted to see me
succeed with them. They didn't belittle me or try to make me feel or look
stupid. I may not have had rays for 10 years, but I've had a variety of
fish for 30, at times on a pretty decent scale. I always wanted them,
but lacked funds and facilities. When I was able to access both, I went
for it. I don't do halfways so I go all the way. I may still be on a learning
curve in some departments, but so is everyone. No one can possibly
know everything. What I have no time for, is people who act like they
know everything, often at the expense of someone else. I've been
faced with my fair share of newbies and outright dummies, but I'm not
one to treat them that way, you just never know when the tables will
turn.

So does that mean that the ones people talk about here, changing hands,
are not the real ones? I can see hard to come by, I'm used to that. Anytime
you get into rays other than motoro and retics, the availability dwindles.
I prefer to go with 'never say never', unlikely perhaps, but nothing is
impossible. If anything it makes me more curious and willing to get my
rear and gear and see what I can pull off.

What are you talking about?

We were just talking about Stingrays.. ??

You quoted an article that talks about mass hybridization going
on in Asia, after I spoke about getting some of my stock there. My
intent was to answer to that, and in re-reading, it seems pretty
reasonable. I'm pretty well aware of what goes on in Asia, because
I do business there. I just don't do hybrids and I don't assume that
because some do, that they all do. By linking the article to the
mention of my business there, it kinda makes it sound like its a
bad place to get a PB ray. I know differently so I'm inclined to
defend the good breeders.

uh the article was just about hybridized rays? You said you would be surprised what they breed in asia, I just thought you might find it interesting.. sorry

Never said that all ray farms in Asia produce hybrids, lots of nice purebreds coming out of Asia..

Check out this place!

Was also just trying to let you know it's hard to get true hystrix these days.. just like I told him in post #2 :D How did this get de-railed? :(

BTW - Welcome to MFK!! You should post up some pix!

Hmmm....do I know you? I would like to see your ray collection as well.
