Questions about our PACU's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
pyramid_party... tomorrow we are changing the water and we do change the water how you mentioned but we are taking all the fish out anf leaving the 2 pacu and the 2 oscars in the 55 gallon until we get the bigger tank for the pacus

okay... dragonfish and jphillips2020 for that advice i will def. tell my hubby what you have all told me... thanks so much everyone for your advice!!! you guys or gals are great!!

If they survive you will first and foremost need a huge tank for the pacu. Secondly make sure that a large portion of their diet is vegetable. They will eat anything that fits in their mouth but need their veggies. Watch out for tankmates, decorations and power cords that can end up in their mouths.

hope the new tank makes it, how do you do your water changes? it can be allot easier by adding the dechlorinate to the water and putting water directly in with a hose. i rencently started doing this and cut the time in half.

try adding pot scrubbies to your filter for more filter media

Yes aquarium salt should be sold in most fish stores. If you dont understand what water parameters are and all that. What you wanna test for is ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte. If I were you I'd look up and read about tank cycling. Theres a whole process going on in your water. Fish waste and food produces ammonia, then it breaks down to nitrIte and to nitrAte.

Just read about it because its crucial. Its a good thing you came here, because all too often fish stores put people in these situations by selling them fish that get too big or they dont consider what fish you already own. You have to be armed with info and know what youre buying because alot of fish stores will take you for a ride. And it results in a loss of fish, time and money.

ANY kind of veggies? we have given them corn kernnels but will they eat peas and pieces of carrots? also... a friend has told me that we have 1 female and 1 male... is there any way that you can tell the difference? 1 has on the top a fin and then i call it a knob... and the othe has the top fin and then where the other has just a knob the other has a little fin...

i'm not aware of a way to tell the difference in gender.
Mine love peas and carrots.
I know you said you know they need a bigger tank, but just keep in mind how big these guys actually get.

You have been receiving some pretty good advice here so far. Just to make sure everything is summed up:

1) Your Pacu will get HUGE. They can grow just under a yard long and can live for up to 20+ years. This growth will take a while (they slow down as they get older), but this is something need considering. Whether it be to put them in a pond, or give them to someone else when the time comes you still need to think about it.

2) You kinda have the water change/filter cleaning regiment backwards. Fish put out the majority of their "waste" as pure liquid ammonia. That poop you see coming out isn't the half of it (literally). Thankfully there are free-forming bacteria colonies present in any body of water that has ammonia present that will process this to a much safer. Did I mention that ammonia will kill fish in hours, not days? The bacteria likes low light and high O2 content, so the filter media is one of the best places for them to grow. When you take them out/wash them in chlorinated water... you are starting from square 1. I would say as soon as you can do a HUGE water change. It's not the best idea, but it sure is better than leaving them in ammonia.

3) Aquarium salt is the exact same thing as sea salt, kosher salt, pickling salt, or canning salt. Any non-iodized salt will work. 1 tbs/10 gallons of water makes a great stress tonic to help fight off disease and such.

4) The next best thing you can do is bump up your temperature. This could be a problem for the goldfish though. You are missing a potential life saver by not being able to do this.

When we say your tank is overstocked and needs upgrading, it isn't because we are trying to be critical. It's because you obviously give a crap by even signing up for this site (doing better than most already!) and we want to see you not waste any money/innocent fish lives. This is a great community that is better than than the rest. You came to the right place!

P.S. While they like veggies, they LOVE fruits.

P.S.S. It would be helpful knowing what kind of filtration you have running.
