Questions on DIY sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
as you can tell I am not good at looking stuff up... I tried and tried and all I could find were the stickies =/

Hey, just an idea . . . what do you think about putting the sump on the top shelf of the stand, and the other aquarium on the bottom, then pushing the stand closer to the other stand. Maybe 4 - 6 inches away, instead of a foot away.

From your pics, it looks like that would put the sump a lot closer to the same height as the 55G (easier to build the plumbing), but still lower than the 55G (so you'll have room for the PVC).

And the other tank would be lower to the ground, might be safer, since it will probably be heavier than the sump.

well because then that would make changing the water in the other tank a pain =)

plus I want the other tank to be at eye level instead of my sump as it will be easier on the eyes

These setups can really be quite simple. My advice, don't make it harder than it really is. I struggle with this myself at times. Read through the articles above, ask a few clarifying questions and then get to it. Best way to learn is by doing!

^^^ Good advice.

Gotcha about moving the tank placement.

Well, if you find that the distance between the sump and the tank is a little too far, pushing the stands together could help some.

Just thinking . . . on the PVC overflow, you know the two U shapes, one inside the tank, one outside? The bottom of each U needs to be the same height . . . then on the outside U, there's a branch on the U for the water to pour out? It might be a bit above the sump, so you'd need plenty of PVC to bridge between the stands and drop the water down into the sump.

The PVC with water in it can get a little heavy. If that happens, a quick fix to keep it stable is to get a metal brace from Home Depot, nail that to the wall, then tie or rest the PVC on the brace.

thanks for the advice...

I just got the overflow built and drilled the hole for the check valve but i need to know, should I be able to suck on the check valve or be able to blow on it??

Should the arrow be pointed up or down on it where it goes into the pipe?

alright, got it in there siliconed, but how long shopuld I let it dry before I waterproof test it?

I didnt cement any of the PVC together because I didnt think I would need to as they fit super tight

also, what happens when the power goes out? does the siphon re prime itself or do I have to do it?

If so, how do I keep the sump from overflowing the tank?

Wait 24hrs before testing.

You should cement the PVC. Although it seems tight, it will leak. I will guarantee it.

The siphon will remain consistent. The intake tube on the inside of the tank will stop the water level.
