Quick grower!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah when I first got mine I was always stressed if he was eating properly but with lots of patience and constistly eyeballin him he got where he is now. Pics tomorrow, if I find the camera.

BGK's usually grow pretty quick up to about 8-10" or so, then they slow down. The lower your nitrates the quicker they grow. They have big appetites, but most wont come out much in the light so you should feed them in the dark at night. I've kept loads of them over the years. My present one is about 12-13". It grew about an inch per month from 3" to 8" (this is pretty normal). After that it has grown in spurts. It eats sinking pellets, frozen (bloodworm-its favourite food- and krill), whole cockles and prawns, and Massivore. Since I started giving it Massivore it has had a growth spurt of about 2" in the last 2 months.

It's a bugger to get a good pic of tho...

Great pic BGUK. I know how hard they are to catch on camera. I've had mine on a pretty simple diet of frozen brine cubes but he's always venturing out of his log to snack on the other fish's food after the cubes are gone. He's been dubbed the "black vaccum" by friends and fam cause that's basically what it looks like he doing haha.

Hey I finally got pics up and I'm havin' trouble posting em here. How to? Or just head to my profile, I have em up in my gallery.

Your pic wont open for me Heavyarm.

Funny thing - my BG used to come out in daytime whenever I fed the tank. Then when he was about 8" I added four 3" Oscars. From that day onwards he never came out again in the light until the Oscars were removed again.
They never bothered it, and at 3" they couldnt really, but he obviously recognised them for what they were. He's fine with other big fish - he just doesnt trust Oscars !!

Okay I'll mess with it later.. one electronic mess at a time right, haha. But yeah mine seems to be fine with the other tank mates, although he did have a run in with a rubber lip pleco I had.. The pleco didn't make it.
