Quick Odyssea CFS500 Review

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just an FYI for the people who seem to be generally skeptical of knock off canister filters:

It's not the same filter, but I've had a trio of Odyssea CSF4 canisters running for over 5 years now with almost no problems (I had to replace the shutoff valve on one of them because I overtightened it and cracked it). One of them even got dropped off the back of a moving van a few years ago and seems to be doing fine.

Wow, these close up pics really reveals how close they came to copying the eFX5 components, shut-off valves, lid O-rings, canister plastic color. One big advantage and one reason why the GPH is better then most is because like the FX5 and Mag 350 the pump is not having to draw water like a lid pump canister. The submerged pump is much better balanced against tank pressure.

Since it is as I suspected a simple strainer intake in the middle one could make a porous sponge sock just for the strainer, get rid of the white bulk sponge and then fill the canister with whatever media you like, topped off by the blue pad on top.

It looks to me that they have most of the parts cloned to come out with their version of a large FX5 but probubly hold off since Fluval Hagen would probubly threaten importers with law suits. No way they could go after the manufacturers in China.

It would be great if m1ste2tea could verify the GPH rate with his own independent test. If it truly has 375-475 GPH filled with media, that would be quite remarkable and I would be much more interested in buying one. how about your own GPH test m1ste2tea?

18 years in the gun club here. I thought the warrant officer gunner was exclusively a Marine thing. OP sorry to derail.

I got here from a link on an AquariaCentral thread about these filters I had posted in.
Just wanted to say I had none of the 'problems' the OP had with his as far as the hoses not fitting tight enough or anything like that. I didn't get the bioballs though :-( And I wanted them lol My 2 came with a big black sponge in the bottom in place of the bioballs then the big white sponge and the top thinner blue sponge. I may pick up some bioballs to replace the black sponge with because it would seem to me that would increase the flow. I really like my 2. And for $58 each total? Great deal.

i think one of them did do a flow test in the sink but that was with 0 head

anyways, why is it not rated for a bigger thank if the flow rate is so big???

500 gph but for only 100 gal tanks
while fluval fx5 is like
600 gph+ but for 400 gal tank

some other things that I have noticed... the hoses are hard to put on without slipping off the rubber seal rings out of their grooves... you have to twist the hose onto the valve connection.

that same connection started a small leak even after I tightened the clamp by hand. I had to get a pair of pliers to finish it off.

the water flow is amazing, I had a canister rated at 320 gph before this one and it didnt even have half of the flow of this one.

I believe someone tested the water flow with the media, and it calculated out to be about 440 gph

This. Just get a cover for the strainer, fill it up with bio and top off with the blue pad.

Also everything is working perfectly. No leaks, very quiet. Only thing is I would've liked some sort of clip to hold the inlet/out nozzles so they don't hang awkwardly and crooked.
