quick question bout tank size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i chose the reticulated because they say it cant get much larger then 12-14" disc. the 150 is 72long, 24high, 20wide. so i figured even if she hit adult hood in my position, she should be comfortable in the 150.

Ray keepers are very sensitive just like the rays themselfs. Just try to understand that they are wanting the best for one of the most elegant creatures ever to grace this hobby.

Thank you:iagree:

i totally agree with that statement, and understand why someone would want the best for them. but i wanna care for a ray, and i will do what it takes to properly care for one. but you can't drill me to the ground when im starting and tryin to learn to care for them. we all started somewhere. i wanna kno what it takes, n i gotta fail somewhere along the line to kno where i made a mistake.

Pet stores keep rays in small tanks, why can't I........don't worry sarcasm...

That is not sarcasm.

Hi Ethnics,

Seems like all the old timers have chimed in on this one so far...

You didn't say how long awhile is...

Ok folks, this creature is only 3 INCHES big...It will not only survive in a 10g tank but with the extra filtering (plus W/Cs) and attention, will be perfectly happy for a month or three. Far less stressful than being picked on by the oscars.

Why does everyone think it's cute to keep Bettas in a cup of stagnent water? Nobody complains about that

I don't agree with keeping fish in too small of a tank, but a 10" x 20" tank for a 3" critter as a temp tank ain't shabby.

Nobody cared to ask how the 40g was filtered...

Ethnics...private email a couple of the real ray keepers on here for some detailed help.

But do hold off getting the other rays untill your facilities are up and running, no matter what size they are.

Good luck.

thanks dr joe, i kinda figured a 10gal thats hella over filtered with daily water changes would do the trick for atleast a month or 2. i jus dont want her gettin picked on. im actully gonna go buy a 10" high low but wide storage container they have here at my local walmart. it should be around 20-30gal but really wide for lots of space for swimming, dimensions are around 10"highx4ftlongx2ftwide. she should do great in that for a while til shes nice n fat.

Just a thought here. Why not just section off a part of the 150 to keep it in? It would have way more stable water params, and probably be a lot easier on you and the ray. Especially if thats going to be the rays final home it would already be acclimated to the tank when you pulled out the divider.

well im sorry to tell you the 150gal only being 20inch wide is way to small for the ray

when people say they only grow to 12-14inch that may be true but you are forgetting the tail retic have very very long tails

the min tank with for any ray is 24inch

dont under estimate the size of a 14inch disk ray to get some idear of that size go out side your house and look at the wheels on your car with the tire thats the size of a adult motoro and a retic is the size of the wheel without the tire

a 10inch ray will look to big in a 20inch wide tank

:iagree:

Just read this thread and am completely disappointed in the first two pages..:( CHildish and belittling..

The ray will stress in that small of a tank. It will need multiple feedings due to its juvenile stage, which could lead easily to ammonia spikes.

I also agree any adult ray should have a 24" wide tank, and retics have very long tails. If it makes it that far..

Rays are nothing like Bettas..

They are sensative animals and need special care.. Ray keepers often get offended at seeing a potentialy great animal go to waste, because they decide to throw caution to the wind.

Good luck..
