Heres an idea you might like! Keep him solo for now in the 125. Set up the 300 gallon let it cycle-then add different schools of Silver Dollars-Regular, Red Hook, Spotted, and Black Line-by the time hes ready to be moved the SDs will be comfy and the set up will look great. You may still lose a fish or two but some will live and the tank will look full. I really dont think you can add another cichlid-they tend to go after eachother and leave non-cichlids alone.

this is what i would do, if it works that tank would look HOT!!! those spotted and barred SDs are awesome if you can find them. and since they would be in the 300g first and grown and everything then your chances are pretty good that he will probably leave them alone when he is added to the tank later
