QUICK QUESTION - Safe Sand???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i wasnt just going to throw it in with out cleaning it first i just wanted to know if its aquarium safe . im leaning more toward taking some sand from the creek near my house. cant get any more natural then what comes from nature.

you can use the creek sand just rinse it and you will be fine

Threw a couple Parrots and my one of my Argentea in there to test. If there are no problems then tomorrow will take them out return my other fish to the tank. I need to flip the background from blue to black.

I'm sure there is plenty of people who would disagree with that.

PLENTY of people. Many fishkeepers use sand as substrate for its pleasant look and ease of maintenance.

As long as you rinse the sand well, all of the lighter bits will be gone and you will get minimal amounts of sand in your filter. It's always a good idea to turn your filter off when adding the sand and waiting for any bits to settle before turning it back on, just to play it safe.

I'd boil it if I were getting it from the creek. No telling what bacteria, microbes, and other nasties are in there.

Personally, I'd rather get sand from a hardware store than the creek.
