I just got a bearded dragon and got everything that I need but overlooked one thing on my research. Where should I put the heat pad for my bearded dragon. Its in a 40 gal if you need to know for some weird reason. It says on the package best used on the bottom of the tank but it also says side-mounting is good too.
So where should I put it?

No heat pad. Take it back to the store and just give them lighting as their #1 heat source.

*not being a smart a..* Why wouldn't you want to use it? Just trying to make sure my beardie doesn't get fryed or sumthin.

exactly why you shouldnt use it. It can get burned due to them sitting underneath the heated area. And also it wouldnt give the beardie the ideal temp gradients to thermoregulate.

What about if its placed on the side of the tank? I dunno if I'm going to be able to convince my step-mom about this...

side of the tank? Please elaborate.... and if you cant convince her that heat pads are bad for beardies, have her sign on and ill give you a hand.

Lol. Sorry I guess I could be specific. On the instructions it shows 2 ways to mount it. Bottom mounting, which you seem to know. Side mounting: on the left or right side of the tank.

Heat pads are generally better for animals that require a constant, ambient temperature (rainforest, etc). A beardie, being a desert/scrub lizard, needs a period of hot "sun" and cooler temps at night.
