They usually either drop ship or buy in bulk. The fact that the pump makes more noise under water in the tub with no plumbing and no head pressure is a very telling point. This shouldn't be happening and to me...even though it seems unlikely that 3 in a row have the same problem...it indicates a problem with the pumps themselves rather than your system.

What I found out was that the shaft bushings were fine and tight but that under load the impeller shaft moved in and out due to the variations in the impeller itself. I epoxied a small block of plastic to the cover and the noise went away. Of course the POS pump only lasted a year before I had to replace it...but I thaught you might want to check the end play on the shaft just in case.
