Quit smoking

I quit smoking sometime in 1979. I started trying to quit some time in 1977. My efforts resulted in not smoking for from a few hours, for a few days, a few weeks to even six months before starting back. Yes six months without and thinking I could have just one.

I finally quit while having the flu. I was too sick and miserable to want to smoke with the flu and managed to not have any more after I got well. So, off them since 1979. It was especially hard as my first wife continued to smoke, as did many of my friends.

I tried the cutting down route to no avail. The nicotine gum and patches were not known to me. I have observed others trying these crutches and do not know of anyone being successful. My take is that as long as you are getting the nicotine, then you have not quit. The addiction still has a grip on you.

I went thru several years of smelling the smoke of others and finding it wonderful. I also loved the smell of a freshly opened pack of unlit ***s. To my good fortune that phase passed. After some years the smell is now awful to me.

In my experience cold turkey is what will work eventually. You may have to do it many times before it takes. Keep trying and learn from each effort. What ever get you to backslide during an attempt is something you can be prepared for the next time you try to quit. For me two to three weeks was about when the withdrawl from the nicotine was over. The other aspects of the habit did not have a time scale and the craving for a smoke would just show up. Like I said, once after six months.

Good luck

Hello; Wow. The site edited a term in my post. It was a slang term for a cigarette back in the day. The modern PC world I guess.

My smoking experience consisted of about 3 times in HS. The last attempt my friend some how convinced me into smoking a cigarette with a Copenhagen and a nicotine patch, needless to say it didn't go well...Maybe that could be a method for quitting.lol

Hahaha very interesting replies guys lmaoo. Thanks for the support. See i quit a bunch of times but always went back. I think this is it though. My kids are 3 and 5 and my 5 year old told me i was strong enough to quit. Next day i baught a pack then threw it out...not gonna let my little man down.

For me its usually stress than brings me back i know its just an a crutch but what the hell its the truth. This time im not going back i really am sick of it and honestly dont enjoy it as much as i think i do. I tried the gum, patch, pills, lozenges even the inhaler but i was never really ready.

Ciggls are 13.00 in my area.... thats just ridiculous. Gotta say the nicotrol inhaler really helps but im not using it anywhere near as much as i though lt i would.

Xraycer stay away from sharpies dude lol

Couple mental tricks I used....

I'd remind myself the struggle to get the time I had without one, and if I smoked one, I'd be right back where I started and throwing away the days I worked for to go smoke free. I didn't like the idea of starting over and prolonging the process.

Kind of cliché, but I tried to look at it as "just for today". No need to look at 'forever'. So I'd just worry about not smoking for that day. The next day I'd get up and do the same thing.

I also kept a lot of hard candy with me.
