I was and still kind am the same way about social media. I don't do twitter, instagram, or any of those at all, and I held out on facebook till just about 6 yrs ago. I have an account for my business and then my personal one. I'm very careful about who I friend with my personal one so that I don't get spammed with political or any nonsense type stuff. My friends are pretty much all family and people I actually know for the most part. That keeps the political stuff down.

Speaking of political,a certain commentator that I follow seems to be getti g the "treatment" on FB....I get alerts almost daily of his new postings and everytime I click on his posts I get some kind of error notice which blocks me .I don't get this kind of thing when I open anyone else's posts.

This is why I refuse to have a Facebook account, never seen the point of it, fools having arguments because someone didn't like someone else's stupid meme they posted, hundreds of adds and the real point of it, which is data gathering.
I'm no longer friends with 1 clown because I noticed I was not getting invited to his events and he said "I only invite people through Facebook now, if you're not on it you miss out" I told him he was a wanker and that was that.
We had a no FB rule io until i gave tue wife the green light 3 yrs ago. A few MFK members twisted my arm into using the wifes account, eventually she kicked me off because of all the fish stuff. Its pretty cool because we can all talk daily over messenger.

I gotta admit i dont really see much of the b.s. probably because im only "friends" with a very small number of people..i like seeing the real life side of our fish buddies lol.

I really havent seen many of the FB arguments that everyone talks about. Infact i cant recall any.

Theres some pretty interesting stuff on there

I've programmed machines since 1968. In the mid 70's they became digital machines. The program wasn't hardwired. It was on tape. Over the years I had to hack a lot of my own stuff to get it working, but I never hacked anyone else.

On purpose.

Back about 1997, I accidentally hacked Free-I-Net.com while attempting to join. I accessed their entire membership database by making a keyboard mistake. I called some members who were engineers and programmers to verify the data as real, then I sent a message to Free-I-Net and they patched their system.

Back after MySpace went flat and Facebook went big I attempted to join, and OMG I made a mistake. A similar thing occurred and I accessed data FB doesn't show users. Metadata behind their input data. I hadn't quite joined yet, but I could see data about me I hadn't entered. Where did they get it?

Anyhow my account was useless, and I contacted FB to tell them this and delete the account so I could start over.

They wouldn't do it. They would deactivate the account and start a new one with a new name. I didn't want that and said no thanks. Just deactivate it.

For years I've advised everyone in my family not to use FB, but they all do.

Longtime Facebook holdout.I succumbed to them and Instagram a year ago due to a certain vendor not having a website or posting a regular stocklist and to keep up with our car club activities.

I like the Idea of setting up an account just for hobby and other interests but I think it's a case of you are either on it or not and I am still on the side of not. I remember Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 saying there was lot/ of good stuff on there too. If it started a bit earlier I would be on it, I spent 3 years working as an electrician in England and Europe in the early 2000s and it would have been a good way to stay in touch with all the mates I made there, now I have no hope of ever getting in touch with them again. It will be hard to track down an electrician called Mike in Manchester now......
Don't know how you have avoided the arguments if one of my wife's sisters puts a pic of a cake she has baked on it and another sister doesn't "like" it WW3 breaks out and it's all I hear about for a few days.

Not really. You can block certain people, but not content. Would be nice if you could though I'd for sure use that feature!

In fact you have the option to "Hide Post, see fewer posts like this." if you click on the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner of a post. If you do that enough FB 'should' learn that you don't want to see that stuff and show you less (though it takes time and the algorithims aren't perfect).

What I'm not sure is if it also shows you less of other posts from a particular source. For example some of my friends posts political BS stuff that I'm not at all interested in and don't want to see, but I still want to see their other posts. If I click "Hide Post, see fewer posts like this." on their political posts, not only does it cut down on these but I tend to see less of their other posts as well.

In any case while I mostly only use FB to keep in touch with friends/family back home I've gotten quite bored of it all so only occasionally go on nowadays.

Lmaoooo too funny as its the same with my wife. I routinely hear things from her like " ugh my cousin can you believe her... she didnt like the pic of...."

Not too far off from what happens here though lol we've had members mention the lack of likes or who/what is being liked.

I can only guess theres lack of fighting because the group owners set the ton. If I dont like the tone then move on to another group.

You can hide comments or seeing b.s on your feed by clicking the 3 buttons in the right hand corner of the post then :

Still stay "friends" but dont see the b.s from them lol

This is why I got back on fb. My husbands family seems to only set up family gatherings on fb and no one was telling us so we got left out. Then everyone thought it was by choice we never showed up to family gatherings. Ugh.

I also wanted to stay in touch with my oldest sisters that were raised apart from me. They live across the country. Now I actually feel like a part of their lives. And I get to see pictures of my nephews and niece that I never see in person.

And is it weird that I kinda like half of the ads on my feed? Not necessarily because it’s anything I’d buy or use, but some are entertaining.

And since MySpace was brought up.... why did that go down the toilet but fb got big?
I loved MySpace. You could really do a lot on your page. Customize it, music, top friends list. Lol Now that caused some drama. Haha.

I have twitter and instagram accounts, but don’t use either anymore. Twitter I joined when it first started and it was so dumb. None of my friends did anything on it, I could care less about celebs or anyone famous, so what’s the point?
Instagram I joined to share pictures with my babybump mamas when I was pregnant with my son. That was also when it was just becoming a thing. That I only used for a couple years on and off. Life is too busy for so many social platforms.

Yep I know about/and use that little 3 dots thing anytime I see posts that I don't want to see. Problem is even clicking "see less posts like this" doesn't really stop them. All that does is stops/slows posts from that one particular source. In other words if you click it for a post that someone shared from say "buzz feed" news source, then all it does is stops/slows the posts you see from buzz feed, you'll still see tons of other political posts just from different sources. I've been clicking that button for years and haven't seen it change much of anything. That's why I would love to see a feature on FB that would actually stop ALL of one type of content. Will never happen though, even if it were possible FB doesn't want you to be able to do that.

Considering the way Zuckerberg started the whole thing, I'm amazed that women use facebook at all.
In it's original form it was a huge invasion of privacy, and almost certainly the most objectifying digital abuse of women in history. When his sexist pandering went viral, he became untouchably wealthy.

How do people not know this?

I think he's a misguided geek with a big brain, and some sick baggage he can't shed. Because of that he may well become a pariah.
