Granted I would avoid the tar covered ones, but would they work in the aquarium? I know theres more than one kind of rock by the tracks, nothing a little acid test couldnt fix. Anyone done it? I like the colors, and free is my favorite word

Stealing railroad ballast is a crime. But yeah, it'd probably work. Also it's not tar.

Are you serious?!

Thats ok the tracks are about 100 feet south of my house, through the bushes and I cant be seen:) Id go out now at 11:15pm but its cold outside

Railroad ties are covered in cresote. That is the black substance that you see on the rocks. Cresote will peel the hide right off of you...literally.

I would be very careful with dropping anything coming from a railroad track in my aquarium.

I'd worry a lot more about the years of various crap that drip out of the railroad cars...free may well be a great word but i don't personally think it's worth the risk...even with a good cleaning.

I wouldnt grab the ones from INSIDE the tracks, but the ones that are about 10 feet from the tracks. Maybe tomarrow Ill go grab 10-12 so I got the most variety and test them. Then just go back and get the colors that work. So I guess, until tmw!

I forgot theres always railroad rocks 20 feet from the tracks, they spued a bunch of redish colored rocks there.
