Ok awesome. I will try some rainbow fish.
One thing to keep in mind is most south American cichlids likes soft acidic water and rainbows like hard alkaline water.
Not sure how tolerant of soft water rainbows are?
The ones I spoke of we're in hard water.
Just something to consider.

Soft water fish do better in hard water than vice versa. Mostly

I heard that this is due to osmosis, and hard water fish suffer because mineral content isn't high enough but some soft water fish survive well in more alkaline conditions

I've seen this pop up a few times, and makes sense for osmoregulation.

I have soft water, and soft water fish mainly so I can't speak from experience.

I think I have a community tank mixed both soft and hard water picture in some thread in this forum (you can search for it lol), while the Geos did ok in hard water but they are not as best looking like they are in soft water, their color look dull and growth rate slower on top of their slow grower. While the hard water species look awesome just because the water just right for them. I removed the Geos out of hard water tank setup cause they look bad over time.

Dither fish help shy fish come out more and offers them a sense of security but won't normally do anything for aggression. Generally cichlids are territorial with other cichlids.

Yea you are right about that. I usually tell my fish keeping listeners that when they ask me question. I am not necessarily saying that I am going to use the rainbow fish or barbs as dithers, but to add some more activity to the tank. I have some activity with the silver dollars, but I think they would also add color.
