Not 100% sure why, but I suspect husbandry errors, primarily water quality

I always wondered how people keep them alive without constant flow of fresh water.
First harvest of this year last week (I was too lazy to take a pic of the vegetables):
The water is so muddy because of rodent activity. Normally it's cristal clear:
