if you had to choose a cichlid to breed with a beani,seeing if you couldn't find another beani female what would you use or a hybrid maybe flowerhorn

:banhim:

of course not.... you don't breed him untill you find a female for him.

wrong place to suggest this, buddy ;)

:banhim::banhim::banhim::banhim::banhim:

no seriously though... the LAST thing you want to do with a species that is already so rare is to do that...

I wonder how much more it would cost to go collect the fish yourself. I personally feel that this is sort of approaching a question of ethics. I would like to know the cost in getting this fish if Jeff Rapps paid alot to get it then that is one thing but if he is just jacking the price up because someone will pay it then I will have lost a little respect for him.

Look at how many pages this thread is. Beani are single handedly one of the rarest cichlids. No ethics here, just a bad ass fish.....

and with prices like this it will continue to be one of the rarest Hmmm who benefits from that? Lets just hope this beautiful fish doesn't become threatened in the wild. If it does and nobody has them we can say good bye.

Hmmm, alright then. Have you seen the price of milk, beef, and chicken lately? Supply and demand/inflation/Internet induced blast of reputation. Umbee were common play, then hard to get, now a little easier and cheaper. This is not UN normal. He sold the fish for WAY LESS than anyone of us could have imagined he would have.....

Round trip flight from Chicago to Mazatlan..$425.....Cerveza....$500....Hotel.for a week.. somewhere between $200 & $500 depending on the cucarachas food for a week $50...Rent a car ....$300.....Pepto...$50.....other misc....$157.25
Sounds like a deal to me

That was just good business sense. Imagine how many people inquire about this species? Now ask what price YOU would put on it. Sell it to whom? And for how much? He got the pair of fish for nothing...lost one and calculated odds on getting another half of a breeding pair...and sold it at a price that someone apparently was willing to pay. Jeff's a great guy, but he's running a business. I'm glad there are folks out there that can get these hard to find fish back in the hobby. I respect the guy for what he's done for the hobby.

My two cents...

For the record, you can forget the Beani. Here's my holy grail. Hericthys Steindachneri. We targeted this fish in Mexico and came up dry. Apparently the locals think it is a particularly tasty cichlid. One other guy has them in the U.S. and hasn't ben able to get them to breed.:
