Rare Fish Accidentally Ordered By Petsmart?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I went in to petsmart once and they accidentally brought in a small mouth bass. They said they were waiting on confirmation on the ID of the fish even though I told them its a small mouth. They didn't want to sell it they wanted to send it back.

I've not really come across anything rare but I always get over buying fish cheaper (actually normal price other places) from petsmart than they intend to sell them for. The fish in their tanks migrate frequently and a lot of their salespeople know nothing about fish. I've gotten eight dollar African cichlids out of dollar tanks five dollar silver dollars for dollars too. Just go in often and look in the tanks. Sometimes you can come up so to speak.

OK so it wasn't Petsmart but that franchise is a bit limited north of the border. Anyway, I was in a Petland a few years ago and came across what I though was the coolest fish I ever saw. It was a weather loach. At the time I had no clue about this fish other than it was neat looking and I wanted it. Also discovered that it could be housed in a goldfish tank or, as it's housed now, in with my clown loaches. Currently that same loach plays with the clown loaches and is a very healthy 6.5 inches long. Though it may not be a rare fish I just thought it very interesting to have found it and have yet to find another pet store here that even carries them.

The Petland near me gets rare fish every couple of months but never with any frequency that I can nail down. I've seen NTT Dats, Kirin/Killlin Bonsai, Black Aro, Lap Poly's and an Ompok Catfish and all at decent prices. NTT/ 5-6 inches $19.99, Black Aro/ 3 inches $89.99, Lap/ 8 inches $14.99 and the Ompok/ 3 inches $10.99. I bought the Ompok and Lap and passed on the NTT and Black Aro because they where in a brackish water set-up with figure eight puffers and the Bonai all had some sort of swim bladder disorder. I've never seen the Bonsai since or the Black Aro but the NTT comes in once in a blue moon. I had even gone so far as coming in every Wednesday and Friday to look at their list so I could special order the NTT or Black but haven't seen them on the list yet and the list of available fish changes every Wed & Fri. I do see some fish they pass on regularly though like Butterflies, Poly's, Gars, Silver Aro's, EBJD's, Indo Dats, Pbass are pretty regularly on the list just to name a few. I did manage to get a hold of 2 of their distributors directly :naughty: and you'd be surprised what they have available on their main lists that Petland won't even consider and they're at pretty reasonable prices.

The other day i was in petsmart and in with the usual senegals was an ALBINO senegal bichir! They said it was an accident and was half price. 4$. It was tiny 2" so i did not get it but pretty good deal. I also have seen a clown knife at petsmart in timonium once... And a channel catfish in woth columbian sharks on several occasions. And last but not least, an EBJD (electric blue jack dempsey) in with the normals which i purchased for 5.99
So, tell me what weird, odd, cool, not usually sold by petsmart OR any other pet or fish store things YOU have seen! I think that this thread can get pretty interesting!

Just got home from visiting the one by my house, the had EBJD (although labeled and prices accordly) and another tank with clown knifes and Silver Arowana! I was like wooow

i've seen delhezis, endlis, ornates, albino sens, red tail cudas, scombs, brackish morays, silver aros, flagtails, EBJD, and gars sold in my local PetCulture.

They stopped selling them so no one in my area are interested in "semi" exotic/uncommon fish. Now it's just some cruddy LPS with a bunch of subpar community fish.

There was a guy on here at the beginning of the year who got a tiger silver dollar, Mytennis fasciatus, at Petsmart for like $12. It was mixed with a bunch of the normal spotted SDs. That was a $200 fish!

Yeah not many people would be able to handle a smallmouth haha

its been weird at my local petsmart lately too, maybe its the season? They NEVER had albino sens but mine also got them in. Along with 5 inch african brown knife fish and BIG ctenopoma. Like big, 4 inchers.
