rate my catfish rig

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would make the leader weaker then the main line. Use a 20-24" leader. Any longer and it will be awkward to cast. Use the lighter line for the leader, that way if you get snagged you dont lose the whole rig.

Again no need to thread your bait. Just a waste of time. Catfish are not finicky eaters.

Ive used 8/0 circle hooks completly embedded in a half pound bonita chunk for shark and the hook will still get turned around so dont worry about that.

doesnt have t o be pretty they eat stink bait, also prespawn for bass is starting, gonna go let some bait sit while bass fishing.

the only lighter line i've got is 8lb and 6lbs.

i didn't know it was prespawn but i was definitly planning to bring my other rod along and do some more active fishing.

8lb will be fine. Of caught tons of 10lb+ cats off of 6lb line. Set your drag correctly and you will be fine.

Replace the leader though if after a catch you notice it is frayed. I usually make my leaders with hooks and tie them to a barrel swivel the night before.

well in my area the waters warmed up ehough, this doesnt mean your area is warm enough if it at 50 or above the will have started.

that's my usual tactic, my biggest cat so far has been 12lbs on 8lb line.

that's why i was thinking of using the larger 25lb line so that it would be less likely to get worn through, and then i have the drag set light so i won't break the 12lb line(just respooled)

i made them a few hours ago.

ok, just got some 1/2oz egg sinkers. what baits would you guys recommend? i'm thinking of frozen shad/anchovies or really large shrimp.
