He's lovely. Not something I'd consider breeding quality, but a decent specimen for viewing, better than many.

His eyes are a bit large; He may be stunted, or it may be genetics. There's nothing that definitively jumps out on me that says stunting. Discus are a common fish and heavily spawned at this point, so the likelihood of just coming across a near perfect specimen is low unless you order from a reputable breeder and request such.
Size, shape, eye proportion, the fact that it has shown breeding activity...the fish is stunted. And it is alot easier than you think to come across very very nice specimens for great prices now a days.

None of that = stunted. If a breeder doesn't cull their fish they can end up with small poorly shaped specimens that were raised and fed the exact same way as others. Same as with other fish. You see it a lot with angels too.
I consider stunting being due to water quality and feeding, not genetics. As common as discus are now a lot of people sell what should have been culls.

And I'm aware that it's fairy easy and cheap to find nice discus, especially online, but for most people they won't be available locally that often. I've seen well bred healthy discus in this whole region all of a few times. The majority of fish stores are still ordering from major suppliers like Segrest, and their discus quality is highly variable.

When you add all I said above together a huge percentage of the time it means a stunted fish. And I never said stunting was genetic..runts are yes but not stunting. And considering the source the fish came from stunting is more than likely. And I do have runts of my own which are what you are talking about. Runts look nothing like a stunted fish.

Runts and stunted fish can look about the same to me in both angels and discus. Though, perhaps you have a better eye than me. It's quite subjective considering we're not always viewing the exact same fish.

I think the worst problem at this point is so many people selling culls for a high price thus lowering people's expectations of what a discus should look like. At what point are they going to end up like angels or something, so overbred an unhealthy malformed fish is considered normal?

I think we can at least agree that the fish in question is sub-par compared to the desirable traits in a quality discus. If it's just stunted, maybe it will produce decent fry; But I personally wouldn't pay money for it and take a chance, nor would I try to sell it to someone else as such.

Not bad, but as some others have mentioned, not breeding stock. Very nice coloration (i have one similar) but proportion size, shape & eyes relative to maturity are on the lower end of the scale. Still all in all a nice looking fish. Don't expect a high price for that sale, it's not show quality. "T"

 Hence the term "SALESMAN". He took you for a ride & you went willingly. Trust me, he knows you didn't know any better. Sorry but sometimes education can be expensive. "T"
