Fluval 404, under gravel, powerhead, heater, carton of carbon, some decor... $50?

I think I did well. Now I just have to figure out how to use this stuff...

What else do I need now? Gravel, gravel vac, more decor, fish.

Howdy,

Looks like you got a marginal filter, useless AmmoCarb, some saltwater decor, and an old heater.

On the positive side, finding that heater guard is quite good, and AquaClear powerheads are pretty decent as well.

As for your question what else you need, I'd start with a tank ;)

Haha well I forgot to add... the only thing I actually have is a 54 gallon aquarium. I'm a newbie to this stuff though, whats wrong with the Fluval 404? I'll probably use the saltwater decor for my freshwater tank anyways.

Howdy and welcome to the hobby.

Nothing wrong with it, just not top of the line. But it doesn't have to be for a starter tank. I shouldn't have been so judgmental.

Happy fishkeeping,

its a decent deal, depends on the shape of the filter,
you will need some cermic rings to put inside the canister (they will provide a place for bacteria to grow,
the carbon is good for a few weeks but doesnt have much use after that(it neeeds to be trashed and replaced if desired)
there should be some filter pads in the tray to trap the debris

umm you need gravel
yoy can get some gravel from lowes/hd its a lot cheaper then fish store stuff --just clean it well

also i would buy a liquid test kit--- very good investment for your first tank

i would read the sticky about cycling
stability is a good chemical if you want to 'instant cyle'(speed up) your tank

hey thanks for the advice. what if i want some nice looking gravel (does lowes/hd sell it)? i know it's my first one, but i really want a nice looking tank.

the canister does have some of those rings in it already, should i replace them? top 2 layers have the foam filter pad stuff, 3rd has small gravel, and 4th bottom one has the rings. i think i will get a test kit though. and stability? can i find that at a pet/fish shop? or just let my tank run for a week or so...

excuse me for being ignorant, but how should i set this up... the guy i bought it off of said something about plugging the fluval in or our hose into the other side of the under gravel...

just rinse off the rings as long as there not braking down [crumbling] you should be fine

the small gravel is it white? if so its probably old crushed coral, i would pitch it and put more ceramic rings in that tray

as far as the gravel if you dont mind shelling out the extra goin go w. colored- lowes only carries bland stuff

i would use to powerheads for the ugf or one power head and a air stone

for the cainster there should be a strainer on the bottom of the intake just set it up the normal way

go to fluval's web site [just search the filter name] and look up the manual it will show you how it should be set up
