ray activity.

when I had my retic she was extremely active. swimming around the tank, up the walls and even mid tank very often. I just turned the lights off and they came out from under the sand. I need to save some money for a better light, something dimmer because I feel like they hate the light so I try and keep it off.

I've kept from a single ray to as many as 6 per tank.... Actvity level of mine seemed to increase with # of rays in the tank. The tank with 6 is non-stop. Rare to see 2 sitting in the same spot very long unless they've just gorged themselves at feeding.

2x, same here!

don't get my wrong my rays are very active they just seem to bury themselves when I get up close to the tank or put my hands in there. once they bury themselves they stayed buried for about an hour or so and come back out.

my motoros swim around but after a big feeding they will bury in the sand for a bit. then after a while back out an looken for more food lol

I noticed my rays are a lot more active lately. They were just scared of my new addition (gator gar) these last few days I think. Now the gator gar sit at the bottom with them they have no fear and the gar pays them no attention.

I do notice if my light is on that they are less active, I need to get a dimmer light instead of this bland white light.

I have a male (7.5inch disc) and a female (6.5 disc) motoro, on a play sand sub, they are average activity i think, i can feed the male by hand if i can get to the bottom of the tank, they bury after a good feed for 30 mins or so, alot of activity up the tank sides and playing on the rocks, new addtion for them. But also bury a bit too, i notice they are totaly clean of sand first thing in the morning, i have one 2 foot 20 watt light for evening and another 4 foot 40 watt to go with during the day. Either way it doenst bother them with the activity.

I agree also that fish should be kept to as near as poss to there natural enviroment, for therte benefit of choice, not our being lazy, just my opinion.

its not just lazyness i have tile as my tank is on a very high stand and has a canopy so cleaning the sand is next to impossible. going with tile i get a good look and a very clean tank so now its not an issue. not only that but it is now safer as im not shoulder deep in water with the rays swimming around. they might be calm but it only takes one freak out and a sting can happen.

also alot of people go barebottom so they can always see the underside of the ray and make sure everything is ok. this is good to do in a hospital tank.

rays will bury themselves alot in the beginning but after a while they wont bury unless something has them really spooked or your params are off. i had mine in sand for a long time and they stoped burying completely so its not a big deal to me if they can bury or not anymore.

if you want to keep an animal in a close to environment as possible then you should be making that big tank you talked about as 6 foot is just the opposite.

I have noticed that rays tend to be more active with bare bottom tanks.
