What size tank is the RTC in now ?

Anything smaller than are 350 gal and you better start building now

X2.

i don't know about the combo though. i had an RTC for a long time, she didn't ever eat any of her tankmates. but she was a terrible bully and the other fish that lived with her had to fight to get food. and if they got a piece of food she had her sites on she would chase them like she was gonna eat them.

from what i understand about rays sometimes it's tough to get them to eat. and if you've got a fish that's gonna bully them out of their food in the tank with them that could be a bad thing..

He's in a 125 gallon tank right now and I'm thinking about buying a stock tank from tractor supply company. Just don't know how big yet

I think it would be ok considering my RTC is really calm. I had a couple of fancy guppies in the tank with him while we were setting up my wife's little tank and we forgot to get them back out of the tank and they were all still alive. So i don't think it should be a problem.

If you keep buying upgrade after upgrade it's going to cost a fortune

A 125 gal is going to last 6 months tops so you should be think about a new tank very soon like now as new tanks take time to set up

If you are going to do 1 more upgrade befor the 10x6x3 I wouldn't go any smaller than a 350 gal then as soon as the 350 gal gets delivered then get ready to start on the 10x6x3 as a tank that size takes a lot of planning and money

Good luck but I can see you having to sell the RTC fairly soon as 90% of planned big tanks never happen

Enjoy the RTC as long as you can but people do buy them thinking they will never get that big so fast

i really don't like being a party pooper, but an RTC's personality when they are tiny has NOTHING to do with their personality when they are 2 ft or more. And if you'll read what i said, i didn't say the RTC would eat your rays, i said he will probably make it difficult for your rays to get to the food that you provide.

i just think it's a disaster waiting to happen..

The red tail will bully the rays eventually, it will either eat the rays or end up getting stung and will die. Ask aquaman 45, he told me about his rtc that died after getting stung.

IMO it is not worth the risk for the few that will get on and an rtc makes enough waste to worry the best filter systems, the las thing you need is for a couple of 24inch rays to add their massive bio load.

I also backup everything t1 has said, I bet he wouldn't put an rtc in his 1000gal setup and he his tank can handle massive bio load based on constant flow etc....

The way I look at this is like this

Rays need a big tank so do RTC
Lots of people love rays and lots of people love RTC

So we have worked out that rays have a big following and so do RTC so you would think this would be a popular mix if it works

BUT I can't think of anyone doing it so it must be to risky to try or someone has tryed and it went wrong badly

Now you could be the 1st person to try it and may work or it may fail badly and you lose both the ray and the RTC

I personly would never try the mix and I don't think you will be in a position to do the mix unless you set up the 10x6x3 1st

I also wouldn't even be think about stocking a 10x6x3 until it's set up and ready for fish don't forget a 10x6x3 is very very big jump from a 125 gal

I do know how big they get and i know that i'm building a big tank in July. I'm buying a 700 gallon metal tank for $250 from tractor supply company. Just have to put filters, heaters, aerators, etc. And the tank I'm building in the summer is going to happen since my wife and I have been saving up for it for a couple years now since we're in our permanent house.

I get where you're coming from. Even when i had gouramis in with him he never bullied them or faught with them. Even when i put blood worms, krill or even trout worms in there. His favoritefoods and he would share with them so... Maybe i have an odd RTC. lol

Alright thanks. It was an idea i had and i just wanted an opinion from everybody.

I know how big of a jump it is and my buddy is helping me out with it. He owns a LFS in Wisconsin and is helping me set up the filtration with the heaters and aeration. I still might try putting them together and seeing what happens. But thanks for the comment.

If I was you I would go to the ray section of the forum and ask opinions there I'm fairly sure they will tell much the same as you have been told here no it won't work

With the metal tank I would insulate it with polystyrene on the inside and add a pond liner as the metal of the tank is likely to cause all sorts of problems. Rays are affected by small amounts of metal in the tank in that it can kill them AND it messes with their receptors.

I think you will find that an RTC will also have a problem with Metal in direct contact with the water.

The insulation will help with heat loss and stop the liner being damaged.

Remember to keep the heaters in the filter as an RTC WILL burn itself on them and eventually try to eat it anyway.

One good way to filter is to add a (protected) pump in the tank and then pump up to a pond pump and then let gravity return it.
