im stumped....

the only thing i can think of is there is too much load on my bio balls and they r crudding up.... but wouldnt i have ammonia or nitrate booming if that was the case???

any other ideas? im out of them....

I would guess that the ammonia spikes shortly after feeding, but is quickly filtered completely out of the system by your biomedia. Even if you have a strong filter, a new addition can cause those short, stressful ammonia spikes that go undetected. By the time you test it has already been removed, but the damage was already done. At least, this is the info that I got from the Sticky created by Miles, and it makes a lot of sense.

My suggestion would be to try testing your water every few minutes after a regular feeding, and see if you have a short but nasty ammonia spike in there somewhere.

Hope it helps and best of luck!

I still wonder if it is something behavioral, especially if you tested your water and it showed no ammonia. Don't you think an ammonia spike would have stressed the motoro too? When you go to mix them together again, I might try putting a divider in. Give the new additions some time to get used to the new tank and all that before you mix them.

so is it never normal to see a ray breathing through it's mouth? I thought by blowng out of their mouths is how they disturb sand and get food from under rocks etc. always learnng..

Breathing and shifting through sand are two different things. Not breathing through their spiracles is a HUGE deal IMO.

Vamp - can we get a vid of this?

Hope it gets figured out soon!

ya ill get one up as soon as i can.... its like they r getting sore using one side then they switch and breath out of the other side....

the leos r still breathing funny... but now they r in the tank with some pups that r acting very normal.... hopefully they get better soon...

i did an all around test and everything is normal....

im going to go get some salt....

i still havent took a vid yet but everything is still the same...

there has to be something in the water im not testing for...

anyone know of a good master test kit that measures everything????
