Ray eating issue....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great advice montyblue!

Deff need to beef up your filtration. If this is happening just from over feeding for a few days thats not a good sign

Im currently running canisters until my sump is complete. So yes...i definitely need to get it done now. Its from a month of overfeeding unfortunately. Ive only been leaving some food in within the last week. Either way...it still needs to get better so im going to get the sump done asap. It appears that my foolish efforts to make things better may have made things worse? We shall see soon. Thanks again guys. Going home today with more water corrections and sump work.

Thanks, Trev :) Hope the sump is coming along! Have you been able to get your ammonia down yet? How's the ray holding up?

Leaving leftover food in the tank may be your biggest problem. You should never have anything leftover in the tank or the filters

Yes. Thanks. Ammonia down. I did one large water change and one small. Today im debating large or small. I was advised to do small so ill probably do another small one. But i still have a little ways to go. I started with the plumbing...ordered bio media today and now driving around for scrubbies:) ill probably quit and go with bioballs or lava rock in addition to the ultima i ordered today. The ray himself is okay. A few days ago he a massivore pellet then blew it out in pieces through the holes behind his ears ( i forget the name)...so im continuing to monitor. Its possible he ate one. Sunday is my goal for cleaning canisters and starting sump. Its a 90 i had that started leaking. I didnt have time to reseal it so im going to get it done this weekend so i can at least run the sump with mechanical filtration and partial bio until the other media comes in.

Hopefully this will change things. I also increased temp to about 85-86 and cut back on feeding. I feel bad but when i look at how fat the rays are from the over feeding then i feel less bad :) can you think of anything else? I did add small amounts of salt with the water changes also....someone told me salt can affect ammonia levels....?

Oh...the food was never left out...one of the fish would eat it but definitely over fed and left until i walked away...then the catfish finishes off everything. But ive been feeding less for sure.

would that help with the ray eating? or should I put it back to 84, which is where its been?
85-86 still ok but I wouldn't go over it yet,if your tank normally temp set at 84 I would say its ok to give a try, heat up little always help my fish want to eat the food
