Quarantine Tank
Ive had rays in BOTH bare bottom and sand. One thing Ive noticed is that when kept in sand the rays are much more active shifting through and exploring the sand.

:stingray::stingray::stingray:

Given this behavior, could one say that its more healthier for rays to be kept in sand since they are exercising and not so bored?

Thoughts? :popcorn:

I have no experience in bare bottom with rays but like you said, mine are searching and blowing in the sand the whole day. i can imagine they would "miss" something like that when the tank is bare and become less active. Ofcourse they are fish and they just deal with the situation they are in.

all i have to say is i told you :D

rays love substrate and do much better with sand or a fine gravel

ive been considering a fine gravel...

it's like dogs in the house vs outside. They are much more active with some grass underneath. I support Gr8's theory

Rays have different personalities though. Some are sulky and lazy. Others are very active.

I agree substrate is way better though

So then is it ok to sacrifice the positives of substrate for convenience of water chemistry/tank maintenance?

(just trying to create some conversation in this forum)

well if you had a drip system you wouldnt be really concerned with the substrate and water chemistry... it be very simple every week or 2 suck the gravel...

Ive done both and personally I think it can go either way. Right now my rays are on sand, the cheap wal-mart play sand, and seem no better then the ray I kept on bare bottom.

I just think its a matter of choice.
