Ray Exercise!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
even in a bare bottom tank rays STILL pump the tank base like they should be doing in substrate

you only have to look at the design of a ray to tell you they need substrate

why do the rays have the sticky up eyes its so when they are covered in substrate they can still see preds yes or no

You are an excellent ray keeper and I respect your knowledge however anyone with a fundemental understanding of biology will know that different stimuli will trigger different reactions. In fact, response to stimuli is one of the defining factors of life.

Rays have brains that are FAR more simpler then birds and Im sorry they do rely on instinct and instinct only. Even us humans rely on instinct like how our eyes instinctivly blink when we hear a loud sound. Unlike rays, we not only rely on insticts, we can also think for ourselves.

Sometimes people can get really attached to their animals and think they are smarter then they are. Sadly it just is not true.

If you believe what I have in bold is true, then you believe your rays have a higher thought process then Human toddlers. That just aint the case buddy.

I actually have to disagree a bit with you here. You are correct that all animals, including humans, have instinctual reactions. That said, I believe rays are fairly intelligent. To broadly categorize and say all birds are more intelligent than all fish reflects a basic misunderstanding of biology and a tendency to assume that because a bird is more closely related to humans they must be more intelligent. The difference between parrots that are pretty intelligent and some songbirds is quite vast IMO. Besides, people who attempt to measure intelligence can't agree on where to place many animals. Rays are certianlly capable of learning which many use as a indicator of intelligence. I would also say that they are capable of play, another factor that behaviorists have used to categorize intelligence. I'm not saying that a ray is a human and that we should attribute human emotions to them, but I think your statement is way off.

I feel the best way to keep any animal is to house it in an enviroment as close to its natural home as possible.

with all this talk of sifting through sand and burrying them selves being instinctual, has anybody every kept a captive bread ray that has never seen sand before, and if so does this ray have the same characteristics as a wild caught ray?

All my rays are in bare-bottom tanks. Some rays have never seen sand in there lives and I don't recall them trying to bury in any of my bare bottom tanks. To be honest I rarely see my rays trying to bury themselves at all anymore. If they were not happy with this type of enviroment why are they breeding and thriving for me? All the posts in this thread are simple people opinions and should not be taken to seriously.

IMO - Just because something breeds doesnt mean its unhappy or happy, its simply horny!

lol j/k

speaking from experience?

i went from gravel to sand and my ray is 100% more active, i did a thin layer and he is always covering up, comeing out shifting the sands, he just looks alot more happy, plus when u think of sting rays u think about them swiming and hideing in sand, so i like the sand looks cool even when there hideing and ppl come over and say r those eyes sticking outta the sand lol

explain this one then after 2mins of birth why did my new born pups coverthem self with substrate :D
