Ray experts... I Need some HELP!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the stress of moveing them quick will end up not being the best for him. He should get the levels in his 150 back to normal first and then move them. They could go into shock by such a difference in water quality, and he could lose them.

I would MAYBE move the aros and acclimate them long and well to get rid of some of the bioload and if they're large aros like you said they should be pretty tough. Then just co crazy with the water changing with the rays. by the way what kind of rays does he have?

You need to do like a 60-70 percent water change then acclimate them over to the 450 if its fully cycled. Make sure to acclimate them slowly

450g tank and a week of cycle is not good enough. It takes a month for a smaller tank to cycle. O h yah, test the 450 first for parameters. Unless he uses the old bioballs and stuff. Stabilize the water first before moving it in the new tank. Do big wc every other day. Like 75-90% Now, if his gonna get rid of some fish, tell him to contact me :D I'll help him w/ his problem.

He did seed the new filter with some of the media from the filter that has been running. Also took about half the sand from the 150 and put it in the 450.
He called me, and has transfered one of the aros into the 450. If everything looks good tomorrow, he said he would add another aro to the 450.
Then feed the aros very lightly every 3 days or so, as not to cause to much of a spike.

:iagree: Do exactly what DavidW has just said. Tell your friend NOW!!!! The only thing i disagree with is i would keep a thin layer (less than 1") of sand.

remove the sand from the new tank and go bare-bottom, it is easier by far to keep clean.
move all the fish into the new big tank...acclimate them for about an hour. The water they're coming out of and the water they're going into is the same except for the ammonia etc levels. then move all the filtration from the old tank to the new tank, give the filter media a quick rinse in tank water, not to much, just enough to remove the crud.
then add about DOUBLE the filtration you already got.
Cycling a tank is about getting a new filter started up...as you will be using the old filtration that is not an issue.
Do this today....ammonia is the cause of 'silent death'with rays...don;t be surprised if in about 2 weeks some of the rays die.
DO NOT ADD ANY NEW FISH just because the new tank is bigger.
Rays and Arows produce huge amounts of waste and you have enough fish for now.
Then change 30-50% water every other day...get test kits and test daily for ammonia and nitrite

He can't move any of the old filters cause there built into the tank. I can ask him to move more bioballs from the old filters to the new filter.
Instructions PLEASE.
He called me this morning and said one of the rays swims to the top and splashes around (she always did this) but when she comes back down, she sometimes flips on her back. Then she rights herself after a few seconds.

Okay. He called in sick today so he could tend to the tank and get a test kit.
In what order would be best?

1) Move Fish then media?

2)move media then fish?

3)start dripping rays in new thank while moving media?

Is rinsing the media manditory? What does rinsing it do?

What is the best way to rinse the media? Fill a bucket with tank water then hose it dorn with a pump and hose from the bucket. Or just put media in a bucket and then slosh around some tank water?

Would it cause the rays more harm to leave the in the 150 a few more hours, with another large water change? I want him to RE-TEST the tanks. What if they got confused on that test was from what tank.
That would be messed up.

Thanks for all the help!!!
