Ray experts... I Need some HELP!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
update and take a pic please....

I think he decided not to take any chances and leave the rays in the 150, and right the problem. He doesn't want to throw the 450 out of whack also.

He rinsed the media while doing another waterchange. I was told there wasn't that much sludge anyway.

nitrite tested @ 0.3mg/l
ammonia looked to be .25

here is a pic of the ammonia test.

Listen up good;

A...do not rinse any bio balls!! dont change any media!!!!
B...do 2 water changes a day 30% each time
C......do not move the fish
D...dont add any chemicals except chlorine killer
E......The test is a bit high, I am sure its alot better
F.....keep it up until the test read 0
G....leave the 450gal alone and let it continue to cycle
H....cut down your feeding to evey other day until levels are all good

I got an email this morning from my bro-inlaw. He said that the ammonia looks the same or a little better but the nitrite has gone up.
He mentioned taking out the sand from the tank. Would this be a wise thing to do at this point?

Leave it alone
The levels might go up because you rinsed the bio-balls
Keep up the 2 , 30% water changes per day, space them 12 hrs apart

when i said rinse the media in aged water , i meant just the filter floss. I apologize if i didnt make that clear enough.

Cleaning the filter is very importannt with rays as i have had past experience where the water is kept pristine but the rays died because of high nitrates caused by dirty filters. We even have one member in here that lost a lot of rays because of the very same issue.

Without test kits, its really hard to determine what was the cause of the problem. Now that you have given us parameters, it is clear that the tank is "cycling" by the presence of nitrites.

WHOOPS:swear::cry: My mistake!!! When everyone was saying "MEDIA" im thinking bioballs not filer pads.
I might have given those rays a death sentence. The tank has ben running for over a year and a half, so hopefully it will recover soon and all will be well.
