ray help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Goodluck, keep us updated.
I would do small daily water changes until things are sorted.

GOOD FOR YOU TFD! you want a cookie! ok i stand corrected even the good book says and i'm quoting this

" Water temperature in rays should be in the 75 to 80 F, rays seem comfortable at temperatures of 80 to 82 F, but we have lost some specimens when the water temperature exceeded 86 F."

I'M NO DISTRIBUTOR BUT I'M A FANATIC AND I HAVE BEEN FOR 6-7 YEARS NOW, I'VE DONE NOTHING BUT READ AND LOOK AT PICTURES AND WELL OWN MY CURRENT RAYS FOR 5 YEARS! who's right, DR. ROSS OR TFD?
there's your answer johnny and now go do some more research my fingers are hurting trying to help you non patient and anxios rooks!

IMO, personal experience is better than regurgitated information.

That said, why not offer information rather that jabs next time?

Good that it isnt worse:)

Heat and Salt are the best meds, IMO..

Looks like it could be the start of a fungus, or the rays disc could be 'degenerating'.. Sounds like someone could also be nipping at the claspers or disc.. What other fish do you have in there? No plecos or polypterus, right? No Cichlids, ya?

Also, like he said, double check the ammonia..

Is the ray eating? I have seen discs literally disinigrate from malnutrition..

86 is ok for the temp range - my best breeding group was housed at 84-86F. Make sure that you have enough air going to compensate for the increased temp. It sounds like irritation from an outside source. But that is just a guess. Gald it made it overnight and isn't curling. Not getting worse is better than nothing.

What else can you tell us about the tank set up? Tank mates?

Brent,
Yes, temp does play a roll. I have been breeding rays for 9 years now. I have tried a few different temps and 85 -86 seems to do the trick. Took me 8 years before my first batch of pups 9 years ago.
Hope this helps !
