Ray without sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I run my 300gal with 4 fx5's. A bit more of pain to rinse out every few months ( alternating cleaning filters of course ). They work great, hold a lot of media and a lot of flow. And you can swap them out and around if you have other set ups. Way more expensive to do it this way though. This is my juvenile Ray tank. 10" to 13" roughly. I have 4 Rays and others - 3 severums, 2 Bichers , pleco, and a 18" silver aro in there. Never an issue with 40% water changes at least weekly but usually every 5 days. That tank has been running like that for years

ive bred a fair few rays and i never had a sump other than the last running tank i accuired as a pup tank although i wish it didnt have a sump tbh and ill be getting rid of that tank soon enough.

I have a 7x2.5x2 260 gal tank and was wondering if it would be possibly to keep a single male hystrix with tank mates? It's running two 550gph cannisters, a 200gph cannister and a Fluval FX6? I'm asking because a few people have told me that I need a sump to keep rays due to their large bioload.. Tank mates would be a senegal bichir, an ornate bichir, fire eel, an oscar and a vieja synspilum.

You don't need a sump I run a 350gal for 5 years with just canisters

Put as many canisters and internal filters on the tank as you can ram in

I had 9 Asian aro 3 p14 rays 3 dats and a flagtail and my water was cleaner than some people on here who are messing around with reactors and everything

I agree, I use 2 fluval fx5 and an ocean clear canister with a 36 watt uv pumped by a mag 24 and my tank water is very clear. I house 3 rays, 20" black aro, 13 " flagtail, 3 endli bichirs, 8" royal knife, 12" tig, 9" dat, 3 7" loaches, 12" silver morph FL gar, 8" red spotted sevrum, 14" fire eel all together. Just clean ur filters regularly and u will be fine. I HATE SUMPS, TOO MANY LEAKS !!!

Looks amazing! Did you have any problems with your flagtail and your rays/bichirs? Heard alot about flagtails being slime coat suckers?

So there is hope after all! I want to get myself a few internal filters and sell off a few of my cichlids then i'll order myself a hystrix, I know of a good breeder so I won't have any trouble finding one, haven't been this excited about a fish for a long time! Thanks for the help guys, great info as usual :)

Yes I did have problems with the flagtail but I worked with it every time I saw it go to suck on the rays I used to chase it with a chopstick I did this for about a month and it stopped sucking for about 1 year but started again this battle went on for about 3 years but in the end it went sucking mad when a ray got preg so I sold it

I wouldn't recommend them with rays
