Ray without sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So there is hope after all! I want to get myself a few internal filters and sell off a few of my cichlids then i'll order myself a hystrix, I know of a good breeder so I won't have any trouble finding one, haven't been this excited about a fish for a long time! Thanks for the help guys, great info as usual :)

The best internal filter around are the eheim 2252 with a turnover of 1200L per hour it's great and probably the most popular internal filter in the UK for Ray keepers

If your tank is 30" tall the buy the extra Section to make it taller they are cheap for the extra bit $20

Of course there is hope.... You don't need a sump!!! I have over 3k worth of water in my fishroom with no sumps. fx-5 is the best canister ( in my opinion), and I use hob, emperor 400's, on the smaller tanks. I've had rays before with no problems. You just have to keep up with each specific tank's requierments.
But, when you say you have to sell off a few cichlids to make room for your ray. That might be a problem. You really have to make sure the ray gets the food. If you have to many dithers in there, it could cause your ray to slowly starve if the food don't get to him. Each setup is differen't, you can make it work. You just have to be aware of what's going on in the tank.

i have 2 blk ray in a 180 along with other tank mates.. i just do a 50% water change twice a week. water is crystal clear and ammonia and nitrite is zero. nitrate is low. filtration is 2 eheim 2217 and 1 fx6.

you can still have a sump and ur water will still be bad, most important is water changes. no matter how good ur filtration is, you still have to do water changes.

you have to be careful not to over feed your fish. any uneaten food, you have to remove it

3451 eheim pond is better and it already have the extra pods so no need to buy it to expand the 2252. I have both internals on my tank.

I don't run sump as the wife doesn't like the industrial look of it. I have 2x2180 and 2x2080 as my main filter under the tank.

My tank is 24" tall and 30" wide. I was having trouble feeding my bichirs but it was my tinfoil barbs who were causing most of the problems, I started using a PVC pipe that reached the bottom and dropping the food to the bottom through this while the cichlids ate floating pellets and this works great! So rays are very sensitive to nitrate then?

dont think so my rays seem to manage fine and i stopped measuring nitrates years ago even though they were high.
im T1 has said the same about nitrates too in the past.

i have a tank 24 tall and 30 wide too run with canisters.

Yeah nitrates don't seam to be a problem
With my old tank the nitrates was sky high with all them fish in it and the p14 still bred a few times
As long as you do regular water changes as big as poss about 30% twice per week to freshen up the water you shouldn't have any problems
