The piece says: ,1st sentence of the summary:
"Stingrays of the family Potamotrygonidae are the only stenohaline freshwater elasmobranchs........"
So the article defines them from the get-go:
Wiki defines stenohaline:"Stenohaline describes an organism, usually fish, that cannot handle a wide fluctuation in the salt content of water."

The bottom line here is I am hearing alot of people who dont even OWN stingrays comment on how they can handle salt from a book. How about the people who own rays and have real experience with salt use.

All I know is I have some of the BIGGEST LEOPOLDI in the world thats right had some for over 8 years and I use salt whenever theres a problem with no side effects to date only healthy rays that produce many pups. I know many above average hobbyist on here who use high levels of salt on there rays for quarantine and treatment all time and none ever have problems.

So how about you tell me of events were salt has caused problems with your rays and you know it was salt not some unknown event? Anyone?

Direct quote from CURATOR of DALLAS WORLD AQUARIUM at the stingray symposium last summer. IF YOU WANT YOUR STINGRAYS/PUPS TO SURVICE USE SALT IN YOUR WATER. This is coming from man who has kept rays for alot longer then I have and breeds many rays at there facility.

As far as I'm concerned if you dont use salt with your rays when there is a problem only your a FOOL.

Ow yeah one last question how many people from this site have asked me for advice when there rays are sick? Hundreds probably and for most of you how many times have I given the advice of salt and has it helped? I know a member on here just got a very sickly leo pup from another member I sold it to a few weeks ago was not eating at all and almost dead when they got it. My advice to them treat with salt fast high levels and today.....The ray is eating and fine within two weeks.

I want to write something tomorrow, but now I have to have a look on my rays for the last time today and then go to bed immediatly, my wife is already getting angry ;) could not even read Mikes comment completely now

I would agree with Mike on this one that salt has helped me out of more problems quicker than anything else I've tried. It's helped heal wounds quicker and got rays to eat that weren't eating. I don't have any scientific reasoning behind why but I know it works from practical experience.

My point was simply that since they are restricted in nature to a salinity level that equates to a specific gravity of 1.002, which is very low, they have a low affinity for salt. While it can be an effective tool for treating ailments in higher concentration, I'd say they are bothered by it and based on the information in that paper I wouldn't use it continuously.
