Have you tested you water about 15-30 minutes after feeding to see if you have ammonia spikes? The thing with an under filtered tank is that it will ammonia spikes after feeding due to not having enough bio media. I am not saying that your tank is doing this but I would test this theory if I where you to be on the safe side. Ammonia spikes can add stress which can in turn make any fish more apt to get sick for multiple reasons or just up and die. Im am curious now next time you feed or when you get a chance do a full water test after feesing and post results

I will have to do that. I think after 3 years I would have noticed something.

Here is my ammonia 10 minutes after feeding my rays.

Very hard to see in the picture, but my ammonia is 0ppm. I fed raw shrimp tonight. I did not do any other tests, because without ammonia there can be no nitrites. My nitrates might be high, but I am working to resolve that. Maybe jumping from 60 gpd to 80 gpd drip and adding pothos.

I don't ever have nitrites and nitrites are the breakdown of ammonia so if I did not recently have an ammonia spike I should not have nitrites.

You will have to have some sort of ammonia that your bio media is processing......and turning it into nitrites which your biomedia (other bb) is processing.......and turning it into nitrates......

You dont need a spike. Fish/uneaten food will produce ammonia.

I totally agree with that. But the point of answering the question was that my ammonia and nitrites are in check because my filters are maintaining it. There was discussion I might not have enough filtration and that I might get an ammonia spike feeding my fish. Well I did not have an ammonia spike so there could not be a nitrite spike 10 minutes after feeding my fish.

I totally get what your saying.

I think Rays have ups and downs in appetite. I think we all over feed rays in comparison to the wild. How are the rays been feeding lately Jeff?
